Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

I don't recall having had any interaction with the developers of Quake II, but it would have been in a fairly early stage of development when I left SCEA in April '98, if it had started at all.

Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

Textures with Vram. The PSX has like 1mb and the Jaguar has zilch. How Vram works is a little foggy to me for textures. Are the textures held in system ram on the psx and then shot to the Vram where the 1mb helps enable it to display more colors and more textures at once? Or are these textures held...

Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

The Jaguar didn't have dedicated video memory. The display processor used main memory for the frame buffers. And "frame buffers" is an idea that requires explanation for the Jaguar context. The Jaguar video processor didn't necessarily have to use a single full-screen frame buffer. Your program mai...

Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

Well maybe Carmack didn't say it but it seems doable. Here is Douglas Little's work converting the Quake II ENGINE to a STOCK Falcon030. He is not porting it. He is completely rebuilding it for the Falcon. And for now its an EXPERIMENT to see how far he can go. He does not know if he can get the wh...

Re: Hello again from Scott

The Jaguar CD player was a cool peripheral, obviously it worked, and one thing I remember specifically about it was that Atari had decided to write the data to it without the usual extra layer of error correction that CD-ROMs typically had. Basically, they were writing data to the disk in the same ...

No, not yet. I don't have any good pix that aren't 10+ years old... :)

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

There were exactly 5 of the original Performance Analyzers built. They were hand-built and considered somewhat fragile and expensive, which is why they weren't made available to developers. We had two at SCEA and the other three were at SCEI. One of the two at SCEA sat on my desk, and the other was...

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

We have a few electrical engineers in the community. I wonder how complicated it would be to make something like this performance analyzer for the Jaguar? Since you used the term 'original' I'm assuming there were later versions of this that were possibly better? I don't know if a PA of this type c...

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

Hi Mike, Do you still have floppy's somewhere dusting away with source material from that era? Maybe you got sources for the MAC cinepak tool. I recently bought a MAC G4 just to run that little proggy :-) His sources have been buried in a warehouse for 20 years and he's doubtful the CDr they are on...

Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

I'll reprint one of Gorfs post on what his thoughts were on the Atari Polygon renderer. I think it relates to what you are saying. The problem with the Atari renderer that is in source form is that it is loaded with a lot of 68k code. Not only that, the renderer itself is poorly written in the fact...

Re: quake Engine on the Jaguar (Scrummy posts)

While I was referencing his name I found this interesting thread: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/43179-could-the-atari-jaguar-ever-handle-the-quake-engine/ Interesting thing... that thread says the PSX has dedicated 3D hardware but the Jaguar didn't. That's actually not really true. The PSX does ...

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

Great thread Chris/Mike. It's always nice to hear things from (pretty much) the horses mouth, especially when concerning a console as maligned as the Jaguar. Although, only being a 'gamer level' individual, some of the technical aspects are completely lost on me (RISC compilers, UART bugs... etc). ...

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

You should consider getting ahold of Andreas and adding your picture to this list. http://www.vmlabs.de/team.htm I hadn't known he put that up. I'll have to dig up a good picture from those days and send it to him. I understand you worked with Scott LeGrande? He said that Souchay guy was crazy. Yes...

Re: Talking with Mike Fulton, an ex-Atari employee

A few clarifications or extra details on a few things... As regards Ken Rose, probably about the only thing I knew about Ken at the time we both worked at Atari was that he was a game programmer working on Black Ice, White Noise. We later worked together at VM Labs, and I became aware of his talents...
