Actually, Sony was pretty cheap on licencing at launch, but got more expensive later. They also came close to emulating 3DO's anything goes on content approach, but that REALLY changed. Nintendo was the worst monster we've had, historically. Insane fees, penalties for multi-platform releases, extra ...

Television ads weren't as important back then, but you make a good point in that 3DO barely advertised anywhere. By comparison, Sony parlayed experience in related fields and sent free promo materials to every store they could find, no matter how small. Go into our old Gameworld and you'd be assault...

I use the hell out of my PS3's photo album feature, mostly for... wait, meandering. The point is, it was an idea before its time that added to the final cost. I loved the idea, but it needed more storage and both feet in the digital age.

and thus had to make a profit on consoles. I don't think the real production costs were ever made public. An amusing note: The Saturn was built to beat the 3DO in the early design stages with a completed 2D board when the PS1 specs were released. The solution? Create a second 3D board to work with t...

d-pad until the Dual Shock came out. 2. Early tech adoption. Can't be helped. It's always more expensive to go first, but that's not the only reason the price sucked. I have a friend who worked at 3DO post-console who explained that no first party console turns a profit, being sold near cost. That's...

What did the 3DO need?

Okay, obviously the 3DO fell like a meteorite with an inexplicable anchor. Time for wild speculation as to how it might have lived. Add/debate as you see fit! 1. PC ports. The design made this inevitable, but did 3DO even TRY to court devs into bringing quality games? I saw one dev chat shut down ha...

I believe both Dragon's Lair and Space Ace had cut material in the CD-ROM days, at least on the 3DO. I had the initial CD PC release of DL and it felt incomplete.

Need to add to my list:

Return Fire

Star Control II

Road Rash

Yeah, the free clinics in Florida were huge fans of strict borders. The one here asked for an ID, but didn't even slow down at the fact that I had nothing. Real champs. I know nothing about Japanese healthcare. I was very Henry Rollins in health when I lived there, and made it a quest to know as lit...

American hospitals are typically run by huge "gifts" from drug manufacturers. I went to a free clinic and walked out with two excellent prescriptions. A big private hospital, same health issue? EIGHT KINDS OF PILLS. That helps breakfast go down. Now this private hospital also had a menu that was at ...

The major addictions in college (I was a late adopter, paying $150 for anew unit) were the game shows and Battlesport. But the main single player obsession late at night was definitely Star Fighter. Freeform maps AND deformable terrain on the 3DO. It made it look like every other dev had their thumb...

Hospital food

I've had some time to register my full dislike of many, many things people are moronic enough to put in food. The average Western idea of "edible" is horrifying. I mean why not have a higher volume of red and green peppess than the actual BREAKFAST they cover? So you can make it to age 24 and be abl...

Always wanted to try Iron Soldier. Always looking for well-made mech games. MechWarrior was good. NEVERMIND, here comes Microsoft's money. Now it feels like you're the bully stomping through Toy Town.

Speaking of which, they're making another Steel Battalion. For the Kinect. Morons.

The teaser to Neurodancer.

While I didn't think it was the worst, merely bad, the fun intro and Australian indie tracks in Quarantine were great.

I have a bizarre love/hate thing with Dragon Lore that I'm not sure I can articulate. There was a sub-realness to it that pleased me.

Burger Bill was named for his habit of buying a ton of burgers during the dev crunch period and hoarding them in a desk drawer, taking up to a week to go through them. An office greeting would be to say "Bill" to him, and he'd reply "Burger." I asked Romero how accurate Masters of Doom was. He told ...
