Re: Exclusive or not?

PGA Tour '96 - 3 courses in the 3DO version compared to 2 for the psx. That is 1/3rd of the game! And how many golf games only offer one course to begin with? (Pebble Beach, World cup golf) Exclusive course = exclusive game! Resurrection! I was just reading through this old post and I thought I'd m...

I honestly think the 3DO could do anything that the Saturn could do. Panzer Dragoon? Sure. Especially a 2D fighter. The 3DO could do just about anything 2D really. Now I don't know all the technical specs and everything and the programming involved to do Alpha. But I am pretty darned sure it could ...

AFAIK the 640x480 output did not have to be a simple 2:1 stretch. IIRC the 3DO had a kind of anti-aliasing feature to make the image look nicer than the typical 320x240 screen. I suppose the idea was simply to get a good balance between image quality and memory/bandwidth use.

I don't think it would have helped. By the time Doom was released the Saturn and Playstation had already launched and the 3DO was in a terminal decline. Doom wouldn't have had enough of an impact at that point to really help. If a good port had been released at the same time as the Jag version it ma...

If they mastered a beta version, did the final code ever get released (PAL version, beta release etc.), such as with Killing time? Is there any difference between releases in various regions? Not as far as I know on both counts. IIRC in old usenet posts the programmer mentions that the final code h...

But ya the API thing was absolutely an efficiency killer. I think that 3DO Doom probably needed a rewrite for the console and they didn't have the time or money for that (or maybe skill) so we got perhaps just a bit of optimization but it was a lost cause. When it seems that ADI pretty much did bug...

It's amazing how it survived in the Command and Conquer series. Which also features some half decent actors too in that. That Grace Park from Battle Star Galactica and Trica Helfer from the same and Michael Ironside. Maria Pizzo was my favourite :) I think C&C is the exception that proves the rule....

Personally I think the demise of FMV can partially be put down to cost. I suspect that actors are more expensive to hire these days as FMV is no longer being seen as some kind of first step into a new art form. Also, the pretty poor video quality of the games in the 90's managed to hide a multitude ...

My FZ-1 has always been pretty marginal with them. Certain brands work OK, others not at all.

Space Hulk is better on the 3DO than the Playstation, though the PC version is pretty much identical and probably edges it slightly.

Thanks to the 3DO's somewhat stupid design in this regard, IIRC the only way of performing a 60Hz mod is to replace the clock crystal. It's probably less trouble just getting an NTSC 3DO.

I'd rather you didn't, I never liked scanlines back in the day and I don't now. Plus, I don't remember magazine screenshots being full of scanlines anyway, fuzzy yes, liney no.

Played AITD 2 on the Saturn and the 3DO. The 3DO version isn't a great port, but IMHO the Saturn version is worse. Admittedly I haven't played the 3DO version for a long time, but I'm pretty sure the Saturn version has worse music (really poor old school midi sounding) and still chugs quite badly. C...

Part of the issue is that cutting edge today is a lot more sensitive than cutting edge 15 years ago, a simple example is the connection of chips to the motherboard. An i7 processor has 1366 pins connecting it, and if one fails then it doesn't work. By comparison, a Motorola 68000 had 64 pins, and ev...

To be fair it was first released in '93, when the MD was the number one console, so they were competitors.

I remember things pretty much the same as Traegorn, it wasn't its image it was the price. Everyone I knew was blown away by the 3DO when it first launched, but by the time it was down to a reasonable price level the Playstation and Saturn had arrived. Despite its rep of being ugly, I also remember p...

Well like I said it is more sport, but I can't pass up a chance to plug this great (but underrated) game. Oops didn't see you'd mentioned it there, but yeah I agree. It's pretty much the ancestor of the current Fight Night games, and at the time was damn good. I was surprised it never got ported to...

Ryu ga Gotoku (Yakuza) 3 is supposed to be rather good. Valkyria Chronicles was also good.

I think the Sega example is misleading ... poor management, not innovation, was their weakness. In terms of the Saturn era that is true, although it is also true that the Saturn flopped hard despite having a lot of quality games. They also had quite a few high budget bombs though, even some since t...

Folks let's just stop buying games period. We need another video game crash. We need to have all these shitty companies who pump out the same generic hogwash year after year go out of business. And then SEGA will come back and be our saviour or we'll be living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland Mad Ma...

This is my first post so hi everyone. I figured this was common knowledge, but it doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet so I though I would post the reason afaik 3do Doom sucks so bad. According to old usenet posts by 3do Doom's programmer, Bill Heineman, ADI never managed to get the game working,...
