When did you buy your Atari Jaguar?

Post by Trev » Sun Jul 17, 2011 8:42 pm

I got mine some time during 1995. It was good becuase even though games were still fairly easy to find, they were already being reduced. It got some really cheap games (my 99 cent Zool 2 from EB games being one of them) Oh, and my Jag was cheap too (only $60)

i got mine from a KB Toys as they were starting to clear them out.
New in Box system for $40.

The clerk was like, you know they are not making anymore games....

I just told him it would look nice next to my 2600.

I picked up two new Jaguars and two new CD peripherals for $325 total back in 2003 off of Ebay.

I was too entrenched in 3DO back in the 1990's to own a Jaguar back then. Not much has changed either :P .

$25 for a loose Jag and two controllers when I bought. LOL

I remember at the end of the Jag's life when you could buy a system & CD add-on brand new shrink wraped together for $110.

It was at the very end of its life for me, when Kay-Bee was liquidating systems for $30 a pop. I still consider this to be "during the system's life", because this was shortly before the Telegames releases hit the shelves. Those titles made it to stores like Electronics Boutique, along with NIB CD units.

I bought my Jaguar January of '95, using my college book money. I bought it with Avp, Iron Soldier, Wolfenstien 3D, Checkered Flag and at the time they had an offer going to send in the UPC for one of several games, I picked Raiden. Almost exactly a year later I bought the Jag CD. Then I found out the Jaguar was discontinued a bit later and so I bought a used FZ-1 3DO to make sure I got some of the games that were supposed to come out on both systems. I didn't know at the time that the 3DO was also going belly up! Can I pick them or what! (seriously I love both and wouldn't have it any other way, their libraries are satisfactorily large enough to satisfy me for the most part)
At the time I bought the used 3DO, 3DO was running a special too (apparently a stockclearing special), a free second controller and game with the purchase of a new system. The clerk gave me the special anyway, even though I bought used. I forget what game it was. Most 3DO and Jaguar fans are at odds, and even I, during their lifetimes was against the competition of my system, so since I had a Jag first, the competition and threat (I thought) was the 3DO. Turns out the real threat to both was the Playstation. Anyhow, I fell in love with both and consider them counterparts like C-3PO and R2-D2. They compliment each other in most cases, since there are only a handful of titles that are on both, and when that occurs, either they are nearly identical, and it doesn't matter which system you play it on, or, one is better than the other and get to pick the best version! I just wish the 3DO had a homebrew scene like the Jag and DC.

How much? Depending on what came with it you might have gotten a good deal. I remember the 3rd time I bought a Jag (yes, I was one of those that would buy sell and buy back again ... I'm getting better though) Anyway, it was kinda pricey, but when I broke down the lot individually I actually got a a really nice deal, considering how much some of the games by themselves were selling for.

It wasnt really a good deal, i paid €150 including shipping, with new but unboxed copies with manual of Kazumi Ninja and Cybermorph. It was however my cheapest option with any games, since adding customs/import fees etc would make a purchase from USA more expensive in the end. The shop packaged it very well as per my request, but sadly didnt check for their most minty box, or perhaps they all had some damage and this was the best they had.. Mine has a cut from something right in the top middle of the front (this wasnt from shipping it to me)... Which ruins it for me.. I might get a replacement box from Myatari if they havent run out before i can prioritize it.. Its one of the best looking system boxes ive ever seen, a real display piece.. And mine has stupid damage to it..

I looked around for a while to make sure i didnt pay more than i had to, without waiting for a good spontanious deal to apear.

Edit: Actually, i forgot, i also bought a sealed boxed copy of Brutal Sports Football included in the €150 incl shipping.

I got mine recently at Christmas with attack of the mutant penguins. Had a sticker on saying £9.99 then that was crossed out and it says £4.99  I paid a fair bit more for it but it was sold as new tested once and by condition can tell has only been out a few times if that so still feel good deal at £70 also came with a mint sealed second controller.

NICELY BUMPED...

I got mine 'during it's commercial life' but was most certainly too young vs not being from an affluent background vs owning one from new in the launch window, although, there was always that one guy at school, huh? :D

I acquired mine in that window after the Jag was unsuccessful and BEFORE the PSX launched. I know this as my friend bought a PSX on launch (within 2 months) and I had my Jag and played with him religiously before that time (bearing in mind, I live in the UK re: release dates).

Anyway, being an early teen, I spent a lot of time out and about on my bike. I simply remember riding past a local Cash Convertors-style shop (called Cash Transformers or something?) and it was privately run by one guy. He had an unboxed Jaguar in the window complete with boxed copies of: AVP, T2K, Theme Park, Dragon & Club Drive. Outside of AVP & TPark, I had NO idea what any of the others were. No idea. I knew I wanted it though. Badly.

I went in and discussed (something I was particularly adept at) swapping his Jaguar & games for my SNES along with it's 'more' games (I had quite a lot, but not tonnes). He agreed to do the swap, and in true child like fashion, I FLEW home on that bike, packed my SNES up into a big backpack (along with the Super Scope btw!) and flew back. To be honest, I don't think he was too impressed with what I had on arriving in his shop (I seem to remember this) but was good enough to honour the exchange anyway :P

Then, all of a sudden, I was Jaguar owner 8)

I picked up Checkered Flag & Doom not long after with Birthday money whilst visiting a local MAKRO wholesale store (my Grandmother owned her own business back then). Needless to say, they were v.cheap!

IT HAS TO BE SAID...

that prior to my friend getting his PSX in Nov '95 (his Birthday) and my other friends subsequently getting their PSX's and Saturns Xmas '95, that we all had a good 6+ months of child-orientated, highly concentrated level of gaming out of that machine. AVP & Doom were definitely particular highlights, with AVP especially, still being highly regarded amongst friends today. And, as kids do, you simply make the best of what you have, so we had fun with the others too. Funnily enough though, I was really the only one who EVER got along with T2K. My friends just didn't 'get' it at all and thus, didn't enjoy it. It was my fave alongside AVP & Doom for me though.

But certainly, that window off the back of us all owning SNES's, MD's and the like - and then playing games like AVP & Doom, not to mention the other 3D titles tbh (inc. Cybermorph, which was included too - loose) really did a lot to cement a good opinion of the console among my 12-14yr old friends. It was quite the leap.

And then, the PS1 & Saturn came along. But our fun with the Jag was excellent while it lasted.

I confess that I too got a PS1 when Sony made their first price drop (to £199, I think?). I sold my entire Scalextric collection to fund the purchase (the things you had to do as a child, eh?) and I got £200 easily for the lot. I had around 25 cars and a shed load of track plus accessories. My loft looked pretty bare afterwards

Anyway, onward and upward to that PS1. But wait! What about money to buy an ACTUAL game? I had nothing left to sell... except, the Jaguar *sigh*.

Yep, I took my Jag and traded it in towards some PS1 games. However, my entire bundle was denied at the counter at EB, so in desperation, had to trade it for cash at *gulp* Cash Convertors. Erm... yeah. I got £35 for the LOT! Incidentally, this STILL wasn't enough to buy a new PS1 game (most were £44.99 new), however, I managed to get the one game I was buying the system for 2nd hand for £34.99: Ridge Racer Revolution. And, at that time, after getting home and firing that up, it was ALL worth it!

NEEDLESS TO SAY...

I've sorted out my Jag collection and bought systems and games since, but that was my first and, tbh, most significant time with the Jag 8)

(apologies for the novel, but there it is)

(p.s. I still have the first 3DO I ever owned from childhood  )

You know, I've never really understood the appeal of Tempest 2000 either. The shiny graphics seem unnecessary for a simple game like Tempest, and the obnoxiously big score popups block your view of the action. I'm sure Tempest 2000 is great in absolute terms, but given the choice I'd much rather play the original Tempest (conveniently available on consoles of that generation via the Arcade's Greatest Hits collection).

HAHAHA...

No worries guys!

As a side note, it should probably be known that in that gap between trading in my Jag and discovering eBay, I regretted offloading my Jag for YEARS!

But I was a young teen and had no income, so you simply have to make ends meet somehow - and trading/swapping was always the way.

Maybe my Jag trade-in story makes MartinIII feel less bad about my 3DO acquisition story now?

It was actually the seller's other misfortunes that I felt bad about.

But I guess parting with one's 3DO is pretty tragic, too. (Covers head to avoid incoming stones. :) )
