What are your favorite Jaguar games?

Post by Gunstar » Tue Apr 01, 2014 3:47 am

Well, I started this topic in the 3DO forum, and felt the Jag forum should have one too. Ten or less, tell why, or don't.

Mine are:

Battlemorph (CD)
World Tour Racing (CD)
Iron Soldier 2 (CD)
Hover Strike: UL (CD)
Iron Soldier
SkyHammer
I-war
Doom
Alien Vs. Predator
Wolfenstein 3D

Notice that my top 4 are all CD games, which is why I can't see not owning a Jaguar CD, personally. Yeah, two of the CD titles are available on cartridge, but HS cart sucks (compared to a fantastic CD version) and IS2 cart costs half the price of a Jag CD or more...

I would have had Battlesphere on my list somewhere, If I still owned it, but I decided to keep my list to games I own and can play. I also would have put Doom II up there too, but again, I had to sell my skunkboard (hopefully this new run will go and i can get another) so Doom II isn't an option for me either. If Soul Star ever gets released in a solid state, that would go on the list too, but i wasn't going to list unfinished/corrupted games. But feel free to list any hacks/alphas/betas, etc., if they're your favorites. I'm just not sure what I'd let go off the list if I'd put those games up... :?

Needless to say, I won't ever touch a Jag emulator with a 10 foot poll until my console breaks and I can't obtain another one, so hopefully not for the rest of my life.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

Okay, if I had to reduce my Jag faves down to just 10 great games, my list would look something like:

AvP - (Atari Jag classic! It hasn't aged terribly well imo, but it's still iconic and enjoyable enough to make my top 10)
Cybermorph - (It may have been the pack-in game, but that doesn't prevent it from being a great, solid 3D title!)
Doom - (No. Not at all unique to the Jag. But I LOVE Doom... on any platform... at any time!)
Iron Soldier - (One of the best titles for the Jag imo. The sense of scale, silky smoothness and VR-3Dness makes this still stand up strong)
Power Drive Rally - (Overlooked and underrated overhead racer. Sure, it's 2D, but the gameplay, detail and music is superb)
Protector SE - (Easily overlooked and oft detracted as a Defender [2K] clone, but it's far superior imo)
Super Burnout - (Silky smooth, beautifully realised 'scaler' style racer. Amazing to both watch and play)
Tempest 2000 - (Best game on the Jaguar. Most of us know it... and Jeff knows it!)
Ultra Vortek - (Unique, cool and reasonably well executed fighter. I like the ambition here as much as I have fun with the game itself)
Zero 5 - (Awesome arcade style 3D shooter. I enjoy it for it's quirky, unusual nature combined with superb execution!)

-

Honourable Mentions that didn't quite make it...

Flashback - (BEST port of Flashback imo, which makes this version rather special imo. Too widely available to make my Jag top 10 though)
Hover Strike - (Really like this game... would probably be No.11 if it was a list of 11!)
Iron Soldier 2 - (Haven't spent enough time with it, if I'm honest! Might v.well be a top 10 contender!!)
Missile Command 3D - (Looks great, but I can sometimes find it unenjoyable to play if not in the right frame of mind)
Rayman - (Not "unique" enough to be in my Jag top 10, but excellent nonetheless)
Wolf3D - (Great game, but I simply prefer AvP & Doom for my overall Jag FPS'ing)

Man, I'll talk you into a Jag CD yet...if you "really like this game" you would absolutely LOVE the CD version*, it would probably be your 'killer app' and the only reason you'd need to get the CD unit...plus Battlemorph, which, if you like Cybermorph so much, would be another 'killer app' for the Jag CD for you...and so...much...more...

*(It's my 4th favorite of all Jag games and I'd just as soon spit on the cart version as play it instead of the CD version; and I really like the cart version too! Before I got the glorious CD version!)

This one is tough. Many Jag games didnt age well.

Super Burnout
BattleMorph/CyberMorph
Rayman
Atari Karts
Phase Zero
Attack of the Mutant Penguins
Power Drive Rally
Ruiner Pinball

These are all games I would still play to this day.

I have not played the Jaguar in years until late last month. There are a good deal of titles I simply haven't gotten into and some that I've completed I would revisit. So, there are games I have played more in the past that may be more deserving of a Favorites list. The following is...

WHAT I WOULD PLAY NEXT:
  • (1) Atari Karts (Only recently unlocked JagRace option & Firebug)
    (2) Alien VS Predator(I only beat the game with the Colonial Marine -- there's two other games to play!)
    (3) BattleSphere (What can I say? I don't have a score on one of the high score lists. I better hook this up to BattleSphere Gold on another console to get on that list... mmm, but isn't that cheating if no one's on the other console? Would be cool to have another "BattleSphere" JagFest Network!)
    (4) Dino Dudes (I lost any codes I may have had on this game. I am certain I had some...)
    (5) CD Hover Strike (Found this one sealed... then found that I had another CD! Must've got this one for the box and overlay. Heck this one's on the Memory Cart but I overwrote one old save already! LOL)
    (6) I-War (I haven't played this one. Seeing the name recently reminded me to look for it. It was in a box... in my BOX collection!)
    (7) Protector SE (I wanna unlock my picture!)
(8)Tempest 2000 (Looking up my High Score on this one, I found it addictive. I can only match half my high score but it's fun.)
    (9) CD Vid Grid (I guess I never used the Memory Track on this game until now.)
    (10) Zero 5 (Been meaning get back into this game. Fun once you get into it.)
With meddlesome charm,
MegaData

LOL! 60% is not nearly identical!

Edit: O.K., I miss understood, I thought 4 different, not two...so I guess 80% is close enough to nearly identical...

Haha, no worries!

Incidentally, someone started a Hover Strike: Cart vs CD thread over on AA. I immediately thought of you, obviously :)

I appreciate your thinking of me, but they can end that thread without me as well. I go to AA only for the computer forums now.
