Yes, I have a Goldstar 3DO it worked for a few years until it stopped reading the cd's I packed it up for many years until now. I think I seen this topic on this before but I couldn't find it or the answer wasn't given.
Now I'm no electronic wiz but I did take it apart looking to clean it but found that is was spotless and looks like it just came out of the factory. I guess my question is what tells the cd motor to spin or what tells the 3DO it has a cd in there? It just reacts like theres nothing there. I had the cover off it and watched the laser lense move up and down trying to read but it never attempted to spin the motor. I removed the motor and hooked it up to a battery to test it and it's fine so that eliminates that. I did clean the lense also. Any Ideas?? Thanks

Sounds like the laser is dying. When it's sitting there moving up and down, it's trying to focus and find a disc. But it's apparently never seeing the disc. If you can find out the part number, you might be able to find a replacement online, or another device that uses the same laser mechanism that you can gut.
A common problem with the Goldstar was the bar that made sure the disc was held at the correct height would easily warp, with the slightest such misalignment resulting in frequent disc read errors. Adjusting this manually was a good short term fix but frequently resulted in a slightly unbalanced disc, resulting in some serious scratch damage.
