Some questions about AD&D Slayer

Hello, Guys! 
I would like to ask a question to those who play AD&D Slayer.
Have you any idea, what the item named "Parchment" could be used for?
It appears to be a non-magical (according to the "Detect Magic" spell) scroll. While I was playing, all I managed to find out was the fact that it just disappears from the inventory screen on being "used" by pressing B. It doesn't help you regain your spells without having to rest, contrary to what I thought at first. Nor does it even give you any EXP points
So, what is its purpose?
And yet another question. Which spells, besides Sol's Searing Orb, if any, require a gem to cast?
