FMV games - how many did the 3DO have?

Post by 3DOKid » Thu Aug 20, 2009 4:28 am

ok, i was reading the Gamesradar site, with yet another top 10 worst consoles ever list, and obviously the usual suspects were up on the list including the 3DO.

The 3DO stands accused of having TOO MANY FMV GAMES! but did it really have that many? I don't reckon it did, so lets make a list :)

- Night Trap
- Daedlus Encounter
- Snow Job

would you.....(slobber)
consider...(drool)
Immortal desire, Love Bites, Sex, et al (grunt!)
as FMV games?

What quantity of the game constitutes a game being catergorized as FMV? Immercenary has linking FMV, between jumps to Perfect. Need for Speed has X-man crapping on about biscuits and stuff between races, and doesn't one of your beloved games 3DOkid, WC3, have FMV, and a fair amount of it?
Psychic Detective, Sewer shark, Supreme Warrior, Corpse Killer...etc

Wikipedia (purveyour of all knowledge) has Dragons Lair down as FMV, which means that Space Ace and Dragon's Lair II should be included as well.

Personally I don't mind the FMV, it's quirky and helps to define the system and the era. :)

This is partly the issue. I don't think WCIII is a FMV game though -- do you?

And then there is the issue where video is turned into usable sprites. Lots of people in the industry called this FMV, so games like Monster Manor & Mortal Kombat are then added in. And Killing Time lays somewhere in between.

"Too many fmv games" is a popular line spouted by many w/little experience w/the console. Each console has it's cliched criticisms that are based on only partial truths ... "The psx had no 2d games", the Neo Geo only had fighters & shmups", "The Gamecube had no 3rd party games", etc ... It is enough to make any real gamer weep.

Yeah, 3DO had a fair number of fmv games, but the genre was still somewhat popular in 93-94. Plus, we need to remember that it's offerings were a huge step up from the Sega cd fare. I've always had a soft spot for fmv games ... the limitd gameplay and grainy graphics take me back to a more simple time in my life, as well as one when video games were at the peak of their diversity.

IMHO, 3DO was and is the best system for fmv fans! :D

P.S. Add QB Attack & Corpse Killer (both also from DP) You can tell they were trying to expand the genre as well as could be hoped for. I like them both (QB in particular)

Psychic Detective - perfect example of how it should be done.
Braindead 13
Mad Dog
Mad Dog II
Drug Wars
Crime Patrol - any of the FMV ALG titles

streamed backgrounds are often cited - Microcosm , Novastorm etc

what about the game show titles - Zhadnost , Station Invasion , Twisted , Family Feud etc

Yamamura detective mysteries etc

There were quite a few and I found them all endearing - as I have stated before some did it better than others but as a technique it deserved better treatment and would still have merits today - ours and the gaming world's loss.

I totally agree. That game as a lot of replay value for an "interactive movie". I'm using that term loosely as I am a lover of that genre and PD is a bit more diverse in the choices you can make than most interactive movies.

yup People are too fast to judge, too many FMVs... well if that's what the people were wooed by in the console's day than it really wasn't. And being able to pull it off well shows it had it's strengths. 3DO had FMV, Saturn had bitchin' 2-D, CD-i had cheese , ect ect.
