There must be a bigger story to Escape from Monster Manor.

Producer: Trip Hawkins
Chief Zombie: RJ Mical
Special thanks: Dave Needle.

That's the whole gang right? Plus it's a an EA game, not a 3DO Game but those guys are all 3DO... weird.

Also, why are the English instructions included twice in the manual?

This is the best bit of trivia ever.

It's always possible that the game was a joint venture, or more likely that it was developed by 3DO and published by EA.

Oh noes.

I've caught a case 'grand_barbares' I'm up to level 3 of Monster Manor and now I'm enjoying it.

Curses...

I may also hunt down the guy who did the audio for Monster manor and beat him silly. Twice I've paused the game and gone to the window to investigate the 'strange noise'.

Good heavens, now I have to remember all that stuff...

The game was actually produced at NTG (New Technologies Group, original developers of the 3DO platform) before 3DO acquired us or, indeed, before it was called 3DO (previous name: SMSG -- San Mateo Software Group). RJ Mical was one of the NTG founders alongside Dave Needle and Dave Morse.

The showable prototype was done in three weeks (in time for summer CES, back when they still had them), and the whole rest of the game was completed in about six months. I *think* we shipped in time for Christmas, but no one really told me.

At that time, Studio 3DO hadn't been formally established yet. We had a deal with EA to publish the launch titles. The original idea was the 3DO would simply be a technology provider and licensor, and we would stay firmly out of the development and publishing business so as not to be seen to compete unfairly with our third-party developers. That went out the window within the first couple years.

Subsequent to publishing Monster Manor, 3DO acquired NTG, and folded our team into what would become Studio 3DO -- except for me. I slid over to system software, and managed to avoid the impending disaster that was Jurassic Park Interactive.

BTW, the sound and music guy was Bob Vieira.

The 3DO devs are crawling out of the woodwork lately.

Loved your article on shrinkwrap licenses, by the way. Pretty spot on.

I think that I'm the only person in the world that liked Jurassic Park Interactive. Specially the Raptor levels.

And is always good to know that someone of 3do's original crew still's around here, not just we. :D
