Yeah, me too. I've only ever used VCDs on an old CD-i unit I used to have.

How do they stack up to DVD's? I've often wondered about quality of the output. Think 3DO can be modified to play Super Video CD's?

VCDs can more or less be compared to VHS truthfully. SVCDs can look good when done right, but why even bother with either format anymore.

Because it's nostalgic and I'm oldschool.

I guess i had enough of VCD/SVCD back when the pirates used it.

Leave it up to pirates to ruin everything.

Actually, I think there was an anime involving wrestling chicks that caught my interest, the name escapes me at the moment. I remember it was pronounced something-"bees". It sounded strange but was very informative regarding dirty dealings in the wrestling industry. It came out exclusively on VCD or SVCD but I'm not sure which one. Was considering picking it up for my Saturn since it also does one of those formats, but I like my 3DO more so I might buy it for that console.

I would purchase the add-on for 3DO if only to extend my consoles uses, longevity. Btw have you owned one for 3DO or otherwise? How was the bitrate? Did the video slowdown much?

I only played vcd and svcd discs on my computer. I also had a dvd player that would play them at one time. Maybe someone here as actually used the 3do adapter and can comment on it.

I have the VCD adapter for the 3DO (FZ-1). On a CRT TV, the picture quality is about the same as a good VHS player. Swapping discs is the biggest issue, as it is with LaserDisc.

The built-in memory manager is handy, though.

I wasn't aware the VCD adapter came with a memory manager.

Yeah, a well made VCD will look better than a VHS tape and doesn't wear out like a tape. But some I have seen look worse. And yeah changing the disc is a pain, luckily with Laserdisc we have auto side changers. :D

So would the VCD Player on 3DO look & play better or worse?

It depends on how the disc was mastered. The adapter on my Goldstar looks good for VCD playback, a DVD player that plays VCDs and has digital noise reduction will look better than the 3DO, however the 3DO looks pretty nice as it's got good hardware decoding.

As said, the quality is down to compression work etc.. I have a few VCD films, some look pretty damn good, others look kinda bad. My Terminator 2 looks really good for example. Its a philips cdi release. My hong kong version of The Crow 2 looks kinda shabby, but then again it may be intended too since its a dark gritty film to begin with?

Either way, ive got both the Panasonic versions of the vcd adaptor, and ive watched Terminator 2 on them both numerous times. Good film and fun to watch it through the 3DO.

But needless to say, dont use it as your major source of vcd-watching if you can avoid it, it _will_ shorten the lifespan of your laser unit.
