I figured I would download the FreeDO emulator one more time and try and see if maybe I can get it working with some games this time. I only have one question though, where is the best way to get ISO images or cheap copies of games to try out?

You can buy games from eBay, amazon, estarland, gooddealgames... ect and then rip them into ISOs. There are also games up for sale by members in our Open Marketplace. I might suggest maybe buying a sampler disc so you can try out different games.

Just make sure you rip it to ISO and not another format.

it will if you get the version that (i think) has the need for an aspi layer removed. Find freedo alpha 2.1, it wont be on the official freedo site. It's on a russian site, it's legit though. It's the guy who was actually doing most of the work once the other devs got perma-busy. It will run faster if you make an image of the disc. dont worry when you put the disc in a pc, yeah you wont see any files. still make an image of the disc. It will be good.

Havent done this for years. Magic ISO worked back then.
Biggest issue i had was the controls, couldnt seem to get a joypad programed in, only keyboard functions.... Got round this with the use of Joy-to-Key though.

The emulator is fine and dandy. I think later releases did away with the need for the ASPI driver. It should just boot a 3DO CD. I used the emulator all the time, but honestly, the real thing is, as Trip would say, "The R.E.A.L thing"

Agreed, the emulator comes nowhere close to the real thing.

is that just personal preference or does the emulator underperform or something? Yeah I want a real console I do but I can't afford one right now butI do want to try out some of the games.

Some of the later Russian releases of Freedo are awesome. You have to throw a decent PC at it to get the best from it mind you.
One of things I didn't like about earlier releases was the changes they made to the graphics output. Smoothing and aliasing and stuff, the games didn't look 3DO to me. It's what put's me off some PS1 emulators. Sure they look a bit better, but the experience isn't authentic.
But it's not bad. I prefer the real machine, but... (that's just me

)

I have a brand new laptop running i7 8GB RAM I am pretty sure it can handle this, the problem is I cannot get controlls to work when in fullscreen and I can't stand to play windowed mode so I am going to give up until I can get native joystick support.

A nice I7 should it peachy. which version are you using of Freedo? Have a search on the forum for the 2.2 (?) Russian version, you have to guess the menu's unless you speak Russian but it's better than 1.9 in some ways, and an i7 should make it sing.

I got both versions I could not get anywhere with the russian one but so far the other one is working just fine. I had to download a different profiler for my game pad but I got it working now.

If you don't have a 3DO console then FreeDo is a great way to check out some 3DO games. I got lucky and found a 3DO for $5 or else I would still be using FreeDo too.
