Just played a round of good ole fashioned "Rebel Assault" and for
the first time realized that the startup-screen says:

REBEL ASSAULT
VERSION 1.0

Are there higher/lower versions out there?
If so, what are the differences?

There are a few revisions of the DOS version. I have seen 2 different ones on CD. Probably bug fixes.

How about the 3DO version - are your copies also V1.0?

I can confirm mine is 1.0 as well. It's been driving me nuts too, heh.

I wouldn't worry about it. The DOS version had the need for some PC fixes like for some joystick problems and maybe DOS4GW stuff. Consoles are less complex to debug for.

I finished this game recently; I figured I should have a go of it before Wing Commander III. Took me just three and a half days to whip through it on medium difficulty.

Such mixed feelings... After my first impression playing level 1 a month or so ago, I'm disappointed. Most of the levels use the cockpit view, which is the least enjoyable of the four modes for the most part; I was hoping for better variety. It's difficult to determine if an asteroid is headed in your direction or not, the FMV quality is terrible, the story feels half-hearted, and most crucially, the jerky controls are very difficult to get used to.

And yet... I have to say that I think I enjoyed the ride. Frustrating as Chapters 6 and 12 are, I felt a healthy rush of exhilaration when I completed them. The ultra-short levels are a nice change of pace, and naturally it's a thrill to shoot down an Imperial walker. :D After beating the game, I even went back to a level where I failed the secondary objective to try completing it. Rather a guilty pleasure game for me.

Yeah, kinda sums up how I feel about the game too. Flawed, but still fun.
