3DO Wikipedia Page -- questions

Post by 3DOKid » Sun Jul 15, 2012 8:49 am

I appreciate it's not the most reliable source but...

1. Really? Return Fire was the best selling game? More than NFS or Wing Commander III -- ?

2. 2,000,000 units sold? I always thought it was closer the 6,000,000 mark.

Gex was the best selling 3DO game.

I don't even think 3DO sold even 2 million, I think those numbers are all wrong!

Only... Only? Yeah, okay. I'm sure it used to say 6,000,000 million. Which is close to the number of Saturns sold.

About three years ago, someone with an apparent Return Fire obsession was editing the video game articles to make it out as the 3DO's defining title. He even added it as one of the fifth generation's "milestone titles" - seriously. I thought I'd taken care of all this a while back, but I didn't happen to glance at the 3DO article's infobox. It's fixed now.

(Humorously enough, a check of the 3DO article's history reveals that before it had Return Fire there, the best-selling game was listed as... drum roll, please... Jurassic Park Interactive. Ah, the olden days of Wikipedia.)

2 million is what most reliable sources say, and it makes sense when you consider what other consoles sold at that time, the length of time the 3DO was supported, and the 3DO's impact (or lack thereof) on the market. For instance, the Sega Saturn sold about 9.5 million over a lifetime nearly twice as long as the 3DO's. When you factor in that the Saturn wasn't nearly as popular in the USA as it was in Japan, 6 million in 3DO sales means the 3DO would have had to be outselling the Saturn in the USA for a while.

So, which game WAS the best selling title for our system? I really have no clue.

I'd love to tell you, however, it seems to me that quite a few people have Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Road Rash, Need For Speed, Gex, and Wing Commander III. Surely it must be one of those titles. I know everyone wants Star Control II though!
This is a stick up! Put all of your 3DO games in the bag and nobody gets hurt!

Best selling 3DO title was Gex as far as I know. Both 3DO mag & 3DO Game Secrets book list it as such. Makes sense when you think about it, especially given the massive marketing hype it had, as well as the fact that it later became a pack-in game.
Most wanted - Eye of Typhoon, 3DO Magazines issues #14 & #15, Pro Stadium, Defcon 5
