PAL 3DO Collectors

Post by BEARD! » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:17 pm

To follow on from the 'How would you describe yourself as a 3DO collector' thread

I've been trying to compile a complete list of PAL 3DO game releases as there doesn't seem to be a list on the net anywhere.

I posted the following in the said thread -

My criteria PAL classification are:

(1) The box mentions PAL i.e. 'This title displays in letterbox format on PAL 3DO systems

(2) The box has an EU age classification label printed on the artwork. There are a few games with these labels stuck on the cases, but to me these are debatable. They could be just loose US games imported to be sold in the UK an example of this is Daedalus Encounter. The versions I've seen labelled as PAL releases are identical to the loose US version with an EU sticker slapped on the back. I personally don't count these as PAL releases but that's just my opinion.

Not exactly scientific, but it's a start lol.

I should add, all the games come in jewel cases or double cases. The one PAL game with a US style long box I've seen is Rise Of The Robots.

These are the games I've been able to confirm as PAL releases (81 in total)

FANTASTIC BEARD!...
thanks for doing this :D

Unfortunately, I don't have any revelations for you, as all my games fit within the list you provided, however, just a couple of queries:

1) Which is the UK long-box version of ROTRobots? Is it the sexy Black on with the French & German language option son the back of the box, or is it that horrific 'Flames' design box, which just looks super Americanised? I'm obviously hoping it's not the latter :-P

2) What does the UK release of Super Street Fighter II Turbo/X look like, as I only have the US long box version (sexy!) and the Japanese Jewel case version (sexy artwork)? Don't think I ever saw a PAL version before!

ALSO...
is there any chance you could update your list with whether you *think* the games came in Double-CD cases (like the EA ones), single jewel cases, or even both? I'd appreciate that too, as I'd say 80-85% of mine were double CD cases save the odd exception here and there...

The flames one is the American version of Rise of the Robots.

NeoGeoNinja,

I wouldn't rule out there being other PAL releases but I'm pretty sure my list is 99% accurate.

(1) Like Austin said the one with flames is the US version. There's a couple of the PAL ones on eBay just now, but usually it's one of the harder PAL games to find.

(2) The PAL Street Fighter comes in a jewel case and the art works identical to the Jap version except it doesn't say 'Grand Master Challenge' on it.

Yeah I could do that. Off the top of my head, I reckon about 2/3 are double cases.

CHEERS GUYS...
Glad to hear I got the PAL ROTR after all :)

Also, I've never seen any PAL versions of SSFII for sale before, or... maybe I have and just mistook them as being the PAL release :?

Thanks for offering to update the case specs...

THANKS ONCE AGAIN BEARD...
once more, this list is spot on and not one of my titles deviates or is a variation of any of these :)

Looking at the list, it doesn't look as though there's much else I want to get in the way of PAL titles that I don't already have, save Twisted, Zhadnost, Immercenary, Gridders (perhaps?) and a couple more here and there.

It's very tempting to aim for a full PAL collection though, as it's very doable. But I'm not the completionist type tbh. Hmmm...

Yeah I'm not into having full collections either, I've got about 10 consoles I buy games for anyway. The fact that there's only 81 is why I'm going for a full collection. I can't justify buying hundreds to complete other systems, but 81 is a nice low number compared to the others. Some are very hard to find but there's not much demand for PAL 3DO games so when they do turn up their usually cheap.

I never added Daedalus Encounter or Doom to the list because there's no way of telling whether there PAL releases or not as the artwork is identical to the US versions (at least on the copies i've seen) to me they seem more like imported copies with EU rating stickers slapped on them so they can be sold in Europe. Rather than manufactured solely for a European release.

I've never seen a PAL copy of Icebreaker, you wouldn't happen to have a photo of it you could upload?

BEARD...
what does the PAL version of Total Eclipse look like btw?

I have 2x copies of the game, one with the Horde back cover and one with the actual game back cover, but neither give any clue to being PAL versions (i.e. made in USA on both).

Any photo's or images you have would be great

Also, thanks for the heads up on SSF2X PAL. Seen one or two on éBay since. Got outbidded on one yesterday. I'll remain patient though 8)

Yeah, Total Eclipse is a strange one, it doesn't fit into my criteria above. I've seen the misprint with The Horde back cover a couple of times.

As you may know already Total Eclipse was the pack-in game with the FZ-1 in Europe. I'm not sure if it was ever sold separately over here. Anyway I believe the PAL version is the one with the code (DFJN5015ZAZ) in the top right hand corner on the front cover. As this is the one my mate got with his 3do back in 94. So if either of yours have this then I believe you have the PAL version.

Yeah the PAL SSF2 is one of the more expensive PAL games, you should be able to pick it up for about 10-15 quid if your patient enough.

I am a PAL 3DO collector and hope I can add to this topic:

I (at present) think there were 81 PAL 3DO games and before I list them all I'll list some games I have encountered which were sold in the UK but were simply the US release with extra stickers and not true PAL titles:

Daedalus encounter – (ELSPA sticker on back of double case)
Station Invasion (Letterbox wording sticker on back of jewel case)
Sewer Shark – Sticker on rear ‘Official UK version’ & ‘BBFC PG’ stickers & Virgin Interactive Entertainment card with UK address inside
Digital Dreamware – ELSPA sticker, Import sticker & Euro language insert (French)
Blonde Justice- BBFC 18 Rating Sticker
Doom – ELSPA sticker on outside of plastic wrapper on back of long box
Hell - ELSPA sticker on outside of plastic wrapper on front of long box
Quarantine - ELSPA sticker on outside of plastic wrapper on front of long box

Also, many long box US games were sold in the UK in the 90s (especially at Virgin) but again, these are simply imports and not PAL.

Here is my current list with information including case size and how it is distinguished as PAL:

PsychFox, this is an excellent list. Thank you very much.

If your list, is indeed accurate re: all the official PAL releases, not including US imports with ratings stickers, then, unbeknownst to me, I am alarmingly close to a full PAL collection. Completely unintentional. However, there really are just so many great PAL titles available for 3DO!

Also, I *think* we've actually conversed before now, via YouTube, by which I reckon you go by the same name 'PsychoFox'. Might not be you, but I doubt it. It was YEARS ago. I seem to remember you imported JUST an NTSC motherboard and plonked it in your PAL 3DO, citing shipping was much cheaper for the seller to remove the board and just send it to you bare? Does this ring any bells?

I think, at the time, I just enquired about the the removal and insertion of a PAL PSU into an NTSC unit. You cited that it was pretty straightforward and, it was. Just plug n play! Thanks for that advice and thanks for this list!

Be sure to stick around and post from time to time 8)

Thanks. Yes that was me, my NTSC board still works great with the UK PSU.
I'm now just 9 off a full PAL set now (if 81 is the true total).

Probably is 81. Seems nobody really knows for absolute definite, but seems you and BEARD have the best grasp on how many there could, or very well, should be.

I had no idea, until checking back, that I had so many of them myself tbh (out of the 81). There's probably a good few I'll never want to own though (Chess, Atlas, Football titles etc). However, even I'll admit, that if it ends up being 4 or 5 cheap titles to complete a set, as much as I'm against that sort of thing (i.e. buying titles for completions sake), I'd do it here. It's not like there's a super expensive jewel in the crown amongst that list i.e. amongst the titles I don't own.

AS A SIDE NOTE...

May I ask, what region was your NTSC board? US or JPN? And, do you ever encounter any issues running your PAL titles (any specifically?) through your NTSC console as a result?

The JPN NTSC console has incompatibilities with the likes of WOTWarrior and Wolf3D, but have no idea if the US console is similarly afflicted... or any other games for that matter.

Cheers :)

Well you're a lot closer than me to a known full set, I've still got about 30 odd to get. Although I do have all the rarest titles so the remaining games shouldn't be too hard to pick up.

It was a US board. So far the only region locking I've encountered is with Soccer Kid and Wolfenstein 3D. Both will not run and display a warning message. So there was some region lockout on 3DO.

Your PAL list was instrumental in creating my own and really pushed me on to attempt the full PAL set.

Another World, Ballz and Twisted are eluding me at present but they'll turn up online one day.

Yeah Ballz and Twisted are quite uncommon. Another Worlds a different story though, I'd say its in the top 3 or 4 rarest pal games, it will turn up but it will be a bit more expensive than the average 3do game.

What in your opinion is the rarest PAL 3DO game? I hope I have it. Dragon's Lair perhaps? I've never even seen an image of the PAL version

In my opinion the rarest PAL games are:

Another World
BC Racers
Dragon's Lair
Johnny Bazookatone

I got dragons lair off eBay last summer after searching everyday for about a year. Ironically 2 copies appeared at the same time, I haven't seen another copy listed since. Do you have Johnny Bazookatone? I got my copy in 2012 from Italy and I've never seen another copy since.

Yes I have PAL Johnny Bazookatone fully boxed but unfortunately the disc has scratches and won't load. I nabbed it about 2 years back - it was bundled in with Gridders and listed as '3D0 games' :) Love it when that happens. I also have BC Racers. To add to my list, could you tell me if Dragon's Lair has an ELSPA box or letterbox wording on the back?

To get to 81 games I need: Ballz, Another World, Twisted, Waialae Country Club (I think this is a German only game?), Panzer General, Psychic Detective, Immercenary, Dragon's Lair & Snow Job.

Yeah... I'dve thought Snow Job would have been quite rare actually.

Guess not!

I've always had an eye out for a copy of Bazookatone, but haven't turned one up for some time. I know it's common on other platforms (Saturn etc) but err... it's not the sort of game I'd buy for the Saturn. It would compliment my 3DO library much more by comparison...

Yeah it's good when people list things incorrectly, I've had a couple bargains that way myself. The dragons lair box has both the ELSPA box and the letterbox wording on the back. Also the front cover has 'for use with the 3DO system' written across the bottom, the US and JPN versions do not have this.

I have a few of the ones you still need. There is an English version of Waialae Country Club, it comes in a single case. I've got the German double case version myself. Also Panzer General does not come with a back cover just like Dragon Lore, interestingly enough both are published by Mindscape.

Yeah Snow Job is very rare, not quite as much as the 4 I mentioned. I'd lump Snow Job with Wolfenstein 3D, Panzer General and Game Guru as the next 4 rarities.

Johnny Bazookatone is a terrible game, I wouldn't soil my Saturn collection with its presence lol

Thanks BEARD! I've updated my PAL list with that information.

Great list by the way! I have some questions.

- The Daedalus Encounter was released in PAL? I have Double Jewel Case version. I have Twisted too.
- I have Night Trap & Sewer Shark in US long box but with the sticker "Official UK version" (See picture!)
- Doom was never made PAL?

What do you think? Some dodgy shop keeper slapping on his own sticker?

Nah. It'll just be a stipulation made by the company who gave the stock to the UK distributor:

"We'll supply you some sticker sheets. Make sure the BBFC rating and Official UK Version stickers are applied to each and every copy before you distribute these".

i.e. some poor sods had a lot of overtime that weekend. I know. I've had to do sh*t like that myself in the past (non game related! :P )
