3DOish games

Not sure if this thread belongs in this forum or the General forum... Hopefully a moderator will take moving it under consideration.

Some time ago I read a review for Target: Terror (Wii) where the reviewer said he felt like he was playing a 3DO game. I can't seem to find that review again (it's not the GamesRadar review; this one made the 3DO comparison in the body of the review), but it raises a couple questions for me. First, if any of you happen to have played Target: Terror, would you agree with that comparison?

And the bigger question: Have any games you've played on other systems made you feel like you were playing a 3DO game?

You could probably say that about any Fly-by-wire game on the wii. There were so many on the 3do.

I think Soul Hackers on 3DS feels like 3DO.
The turn around, the "walking" (not as good as "Tetsujin"), the battles with stiff Kazuma Kaneko figures.

Funny as it is, every time I boot up the original "Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain", I get that 3DO feel. I know the game was in development for the 3DO as well as the Saturn, but I just get that deep feeling of nostalgia like it was destined to be on the system, not where it ended up being. I also get the same feeling when I play Loaded and Crusader: No Remorse. They just feel like they should have been 3DO games. I know it's 32-Bit era games, and not new stuff you might have been looking for, but that's just how I feel about those titles anyway. Oh, and I don't care what you say, but Enemy Zero should have been a 3DO game!

Weird association, but I was playing Amnesia : A Machine for Pigs the last few days, and the art style and overall tone, in smallish ways, reminded me of Killing Time (hidden mystery, abandoned mansion, some of the art direction) in some ways...mostly visually. Not really a 3DOish game, but it had its moments

Great game btw if anyone likes the horror genre minus combat...very athmospheric and excellent audio

Steel Harbinger for PlayStation felt very 3DO-esque to me; something about the textures and the general "look" just seemed very reminiscent of the 3DO and, perhaps, the Saturn as well. I should start playing that again...

Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom. I suppose that goes without saying since Wing Commander III was released on the 3DO. But playing WC:IV on my PS1 made me realize that the game could have been done on the 3DO as well.

There is a rumour, that the Wing Commander IV is buried somewhere in EA vaults. (True story)

It wouldn't surprise me at all if theres an unfinished alpha build of WC:IV out there some where. There are probably several such builds of unreleased 3DO games. The question is who will be the lucky ones to discover them.

Funnily enough, I just recently acquired an interest in Crusader: No Remorse, and it too struck me as something that I'd expect to play on my 3DO rather than my Saturn. Not that I'm complaining! Right now I'm hunting up the Saturn version, so then I'll see if that first impression holds true.

Hm.. I wouldn't say Target Terror feels like a 3DO game. Or at least, not as much as it feels like a mid-to-late '90s, American-developed light gun shooter (Maximum Force, Area 51). After all, it is a port of an arcade game that was developed by some of the same people that had a hand in making some of those '90s light gun shooters.

Unfortunately, light gun shooters on the 3DO had a tendency to be more "Mad Dog McCree", and less "Area 51", so asides from the digitized characters, maybe the 3DO comparison isn't entirely apt in the end.

In what way? The only 3DO light gun shooter I've played is Space Pirates, and that only briefly, so I don't yet have a sense of how 3DO light gun shooters are different from other American light gun shooters of the time.

The American Laser Games gun games use a different method to how they register your attacks/shots.

Basically, Area 51 throws individually digital renditions of enemies SEPARATE from their environments up against you. You shoot them, they die and disappear. If you don't shoot them, they shoot you and continue to until you dispatch them.

However, the ALG titles use pre-recorded film footage (like an FMV movie) and when you attack an appearing enemy, it's part of one whole recorded scene. As a result, when the enemy appears, there is a small window whereby you can attack/shoot the enemy within as well as managing to shoot the enemy in the games own pre-determined hitbox. If you hit the enemy, the film footage 'proceeds' with the enemy dying and playing out his death. However, if you fail to hit the enemy in the window given, you are shot and the footage abruptly ends telling you you got shot and to try again.

I'll be honest when I say, 3DO-style gun games aren't really that much fun vs the likes of the Virtua Cops, Time Crisises, Maximum Forces and Area 51's of the world ;)

NGN summed it up great. And on top of what he already mentioned, games like Area 51 and Maximum Force are very fast paced and chaotic, whereas your Mad Dog McCrees are slow and plodding. They can still be fun for what they are, but it's a totally different style of experience in my opinion.

I like both styles - a light gun game is good fun, especially when you are looking for a simple time waster. I've got most of the ALG games (missing Drug Wars) and both Area 51 & Maximum Force. Each have things I like about them.

Thanks for the answers, guys! It's funny... in my brief try-out of Space Pirates, I was wondering why you die with only one shot, since I couldn't think of any other light gun game where that happens. Now I feel pretty stupid for not realizing that having full motion video enemies pretty much necessitates that. :oops: Technically they could have handled it the same way as Creature Shock, but in a live action game that would have been ridiculously expensive, especially in scenes with multiple enemies - with three enemies on screen, you'd need to film eight different video clips in order to cover every permutation of which ones get shot!

But man, now I'm really looking forward to getting my 3DO set up with my CRTD so I can do a full-on play of the game.

Area 51 would have been pretty cool to have on the 3DO. For that matter, I can't help but feel that the Jaguar CD deserved a port too. Another reason to be unhappy that the 3DO's lifespan wasn't a bit longer...

The more I play the Indie Title Demon House on the XBOX 360, the more I feel like I am playing a game very much like Escape From Monster Manor. I don't know exactly why, but the game feels to have the same kid of quality about it to me. You should check it out to see what I mean.

King's Field on PS1 has a definite 3DO vibe to it.

It might be technically more accomplished than what would be possible on 3DO outright, but still, it has that feel to it:

King's Field is a lot of fun. Kind of creepy at points, too. Turned out to be a fairly long-running series, featuring some spin-offs like Shadow Tower as well.

I don't know. I always found King's Field to be a total pain in the ass. However, I was always intrigued by the graphics of the game. Perhaps one of these days I should revisit the game. Especially since Playstation crap seems to be going up in price these days.
