Soldier Pad

Did anyone else have this for the SNES? I'm not sure how many are aware of this, but the same pad (albeit with a different color scheme) was sold for the Super Famicom back in the day.

In fact I bought one brand new for about 5 dollars when it was new at a Funcoland when I was a kid. I didn't realize it was for fighting games, but I thought it was the coolest looking controller I'd ever seen, so I picked it up. I didn't even know they made a 3DO version until I started researching this system. Luckily my 3DO system came with one.

Did anyone else get the purple/grey/yellow Soldier fighting pad back in the day for the SNES? It even sported a better SNES style dpad.

Only systems I have ever had the Soldier pad for are the 3DO and the Sega Genesis. In the end, I really like the Genesis six button Pad better for fighters on that system. For the 3DO though, the Soldier Pad is a must. I am loucky I have two of them. Chance really that I have them. Really helps to make that game feel buttery smooth controlwise. Not really any other real choice on the 3DO. But yes, it is a really nicely designed control pad for sure.

I've never seen a Genesis model, I'll have to check that out. Would be a cool second controller for my Nomad.

Yeah, the dpad is a bit stiffer than the Super Fami version, but it's a great pad, and as you saw on my Street Fighter thread, it really helps with pulling off harder moves. I got mine, luckily, with my system. There's another I have my eye on. I don't really need it, but it's calling me.

Guess I got the 3DO bug. :P

Good, Now hopefully you keep the 3DO bug. It's a great little system. I have had to sell collections over the years, sadly. I regret it all the time. I would recommend holding onto what you have.

I know the feeling. I sold my Sega Saturn collection of over 80 games, US and Japanese, which included titles like SF Zero 3, Castelvania SotN, Panzer Dragoon Saga, etc. Not my Saturn collection is.... pitiful, in comparison. At least I have a region modded Saturn, haha. I still regret selling all that. Really hurts sometimes.

So yeah, there's no way I'm getting rid of the 3DO. Many systems I own are disposable. Xbox, Xbox 360, Game Gear... but there are a select few I know that as I collect, they'll be mine forever. Those include the 3DO, Sega Master System, etc.

Really loving this system, and I'm SO happy I got it.

I have a Super Famicom version still on the card. I'd be willing to trade it for the 3DO version.

Nice dude, great controller. If I find another one locally, I might just take you up on that offer.

Btw, was there ever a SNES or Genesis to 3DO cord/adapter ever made? Might make that Soldier controller useful.

I had the SNES one. Never really cared for it, TBH. It was a novelty that I snagged for $5 new back in the day and that was about it.

Not sure if this is the sort of answer you're looking for, but there is a 3DZero adaptor for 3DO that allows you to use Super Nintendo controllers with the 3DO.

Thus, you could use the SNES soldier pad with the 3DO

The 3DZero is the best of the SNES -> 3DO adapters.

I'll have to check that out. Might be better with the SNES' dpad on that Soldier pad. Hopefully they're not hard to find. I'll go have a looksie.

Yeah you can ignore that guy. I talked to him once and he claimed they were "Super Rare" despite him having more than 10 for sale. He claimed that there were no other adapters and these were the only ones. Just a scam, I've filtered him out of my searches for years now.

What 3DOExperience said is true. There were still sites that had these listed for $20.00 new like a year ago. I'll see if I can find it again and list a linksie. That price is just rubbish.

Figured as much. Where do these people get off?

And who the hell is stupid enough to pay that? Even if it WAS that rare, that's more money than 5-7 Solider controllers will cost you!

Most of us in the Turbografx community refer to these people as "Collectards". Not saying that you can't collect and enjoy for a system, but going to the extent that these guys go through doesn't help. They are the main reasons why the bubble for gaming is so inflated now as it is and games cost almost ten times what they should cost in the first place. It's sad, really.

Also, don't forget the... "Reselltards" ;)

Yeah, flippers ahve done more harm than good of late too. I remember there was this guy on the PCEngineFX boards for like three years asking people to help him get a full US set of Turbografx games. Mind you, I helped out by buying some of his doubles off of him, and he was a really nice guy. He set the community into a pissy mood though because he accomplished the goal outside of Magical Chase. That's the one game he couldn't get because of the stupid high price the game fetches. No sooner does he get the set, after much help from members on the board, he turns around and lists the whole set for sale as a LOT. Mind you, I understand that it's his stuff and he can do whatever he wants with it, but many of us helped him get that set together and even bought some of his doubles at a little more than should have because he was trying for that set and we wanted to see him succeed. It's one thing if you have en emergency come up or something and your collection has to go, but all he sold were the 92 Hu Card set. he got over $3,000.00 for it, or has been said, and really pissed a lot of people off doing it because many members of the community hooked him up on the cheap, so they said, so he made a HUGE profit on it. From a fan's perspective, it was really sad to see that happen and just reminded me again what this hobby had come to. For him, it wasn't about playing the games, it was all about getting the whole set. Once he had done it, or got as close as he knew he would, it was time to purge, just to say he did it, and move on to the next console to gather. I guess I just don't understand the logic. He sure had fun posting all the pics of his shortly owned collection though. In the end, I see both perspectives though, I guess. To each their own. He was a pretty nice guy though so I was sad to see him leave the community like that.

As someone who has taken part in other hobbies, there are always people like this. People who will use people in order to get what they want, and then leave you to the wolves.

I've never understood it, and yeah, it's horrible. But I'd like to think that this isn't the norm. I'd like to think that there's at least a thousand people like me vs someone like that.

At the very least, what you guys have to admit is nice is that on a 3DO board I'd assume you'd rarely have to deal with fanboys who hate the system and give you crap for it :P. I don't think many, if any, care about that console war anymore...

I wish I could agree with this sentiment, but it's becoming more and more rampant as ebay digs in deeper. I was just looking around yesterday on ebay at 3DO prices and I have to say that it's really sad. As much as I enjoy the videos on youtube for the 3DO games, I wish they would come down. Or never would have been made. Reason being, the minute someone says the game is amazing and VERY rare, it automatically gets bumped in price on ebay. This isn't just the case with 3DO though, it's happening to all game consoles now. I'm seeing games like TRIP'd listed at almost $200.00! Cool games, but not $200.00 cool. 3DOKid here listed Doctor Hauzer as the greatest 3DO game of all time. Now you have douchebags charging anywhere between $300.00 and $800.00 for the game on ebay, it's ridiculous. I haven't seen anyone pay this for the game, however, what it does do is it makes the auction prices spike too. Believe me, we are on our way there. The 3DO will end up like the Jaguar and Turbografx 16 here shortly. There seems to be more interest being generated for the system and everyone knows, in this day and age, if it's considered "R@R3Z, OMG, OOP, L@@K!!!!" it's going to generate serious cash flow on ebay and the Shelf Monkeys get to have their fun. "Oh? You mean you don't have this game? I do, sealed in an airtight acrylic box with an 9.2 rating. My whole collection is sterile and untouched! LOLOLOLOLOL!" Sad days, my friends. I've seen it and will never understand the appeal of a bunch of boxes sitting on a shelf that have no purpose other than to sit there. They aren't even decorations or statues or whatnot.

Back to the Soldier Pad. I wonder why Capcom chose the color schemes for the separate consoles. Just weird as the buttons are always different. Why red and grey even for 3DO?

The Super Famicom one kinda makes sense. The Genesis, not so much. The 3DO.. I have no idea what they were thinking, lol. Seriously though, love each of the controllers none the less. Thinking of getting a Genesis one for the use of my Master System... hmmmm.
