Out of this World: 3DO still got it

Post by klogg » Mon Apr 17, 2017 2:48 am

I just got the port of Another World Anniversary for Xbox One, I played it to the end, the game is beautiful by itself, with all that hi-res visual. But as soon as I finished I immediately fired up my FZ-10 with the same game, on a CRT TV. Man. The 3DO port is more fluid and still the most beautiful of all. Just the music that does not really fit as much as the original. I wish more people could know how beautiful that version is.

While it's a good port, I really don't like the graphic "enhancements" made to the 3DO version. Some of the backgrounds are too detailed and painting like compared to the originals, and don't mesh well with the simple polygon look of the original game. IMO, the anniversary editions did a better job of updating the backgrounds while being faithful to the aesthetics of the originals.

I dig the 3DO version. My big issue with it though is that it runs way too fast. It makes areas of the game much harder than the original (and not in a good way). The modern remastered versions are the way to play this game now, but the 3DO one is still a good experience too.

I enjoyed the 3DO version a lot more than I expected -- certainly more than the Sega CD version, which I didn't like at all. But the SNES version is still nearest and dearest to my heart. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking since it was my first version of the game, but despite all the slowdown, it has a special atmosphere that sticks with me, and somehow the way it plays/controls makes more sense to me than other versions.

These aren't usually two things you hear mentioned in the same sentence. :o

It's a good thing I put them in different sentences, then!
