Trip Hawkins - this thread is for you :)
As I've told everyone before - I sent a letter to Trip Hawkins. In that letter I put the URL for this forum. As we are the LAST OF THE GREAT 3DO FANBOYS -- I thought it best he find the place without to much hassle.
So, when William 'Trip' Hawkins gets my letter next week, types the old 3DO Zone URL into his mighty Blaster powered PC, and then inevitably opens this thread. What do you want him to see?
So go on - say hello to the Father of the 3DO.
...anything rude gets deleted
3DO kid!
PS: ...We love you Trip!

Trip's unigue vision for the future of gaming was a breath of fresh air! Even though 3DO was viewed as a failure by many "mainstream" gamers, it paved the way for much of what we see today. Thank you for role with Electronic Arts & my favorite console, 3DO Mr. Hawkins. One of the giants in the field ... Miyamoto, Suzki, Hawkins!

We do hold him high!
Electronic Arts was quite the success. 3DO? Well it was influential wasn't it? Certainly more so than: Sega 32X, CDi, FM towns, Jaguar, CD32, Virtual Boy, i'd even say the N64.
And anyway - you dare to soil Trip Hawkins' own special "We heart U" thread with your nefarious neigh saying?
A pox on you.

Me too. 'Trip' sounds very American. Anyone remember a film with Rob Lowe and Jacqueline Bisset? Her and a young Andrew McCarthy do naughty things in a lift - turns out Ms Bisset is McCarthy's room-mates mum. Anyway - it's one of my favourite movies for three reasons.
1) Jacqueline Bisset.
2) Guards Red Porsche 911 SC Cabriolet
3) It's kind of a cool film.
...anyway, on-topic, Rob Lowes character is called 'Skip' - which I always thought was kind of cool. 'Trip' is even better IMHO.

Mr. Hawkins, good to see you:
you'll be on television tomorrow: CNN - Virtual Worlds.
If someone reads your short-bio here:
http://edition.cnn.com/CNNI/Programs/fu ... al.worlds/
...he'll know why you're one of the most important persons in videogame history. Even if EA tries to change history (they forgot the Internet).
How about writing something for 3DOKids Blog or Forum? Something!
Why do you still look like 25?

No offense to 'Bambi' but her career may be better suited to the clothes-removal entertainment arena as opposed to 'interviewer'. See, one she has a natural talent for, the other she clearly does not.
...Are people actually christened 'Bambi' btw? I recently sold an old PS2 game on eBay to someone called, and I kid you all not, 'Zoltan'. I wondered at the time about the christening. The vicar/priest clutching the infant in his arms and muttering 'I name thee ZOLTAN, terror of the universe'. I don't know, maybe these names are popular outside of my house
And Trip seems have mellowed quite considerably doesn't he?

I feel better that he now looks older than 25 - for a while he was just scaring me!
If you're out there Trip I'd just like to say thanks for the memories!
Success isn't always measured by $$ but often by imitation
Broad appeal casual gaming and hard core gaming in one console!!
Just wish you could've market outside Japan/US
1 million PS2's and NDS' in Australia alone - how many 3do's could've been sold ? We'll never know

Its a tough one to call - back in those days even the major companies relied on mum & dad (mom & pop - for our US readers) distributors for their products in secondary regions. I mean if it were your own money at stake would you play it safe and see what happens in the rest of world or go out on a limb? Unfortunately , but understandably most went with the safer option. I have no doubt that with advertising from Panasonic/Goldstar the 3do may have shifted in the ball park of 75,000 units and with potentially more for M2. That figure is based on the take up rate of similar technologies here on their first run.
75,000 isn't much but if that were repeated in South Africa , Brazil etc all of a sudden we are are looking at a much larger user base and something that would be much more attractive to software houses as the 3do didn't suffer region locking.

I think what Trip would say, or in fact Panasonic would say, if they were here, is that the FZ-1 represented a fairly expensive piece of equipment. Panasonic didn't cut any corners either. What they produced was a high-end "feel" piece of equipment.
I doubt that of the $700-$600 they charged for an FZ-1 there wasn't all that much profit after distribution and retail took their cut.
Then you are going to have setup some kind of presence. An office or a representative, marketing, PR, co-op funding. I wouldn't be surprised if they decided it wasn't worth it.

unfortunately I think that is exactly what happened.I don't think the price was too out there for our market though as we were already paying that sort of money for cd32 , vcr's and high end cd players here.
The fact that there are so many FZ-1's still up and running is tribute to the fact that corners were not cut - these days I can only say the same for Nintendo or the PSP (which is predominately logitechs engineering).
