I was wondering about titles that were released in the UK, but never made it to the States. I am aware of two...

-Defcon 5
-Striker

Are there others that I am missing? I would love to be able to get import games in full english! :D

It's funny too, because I have advertisements for Defcon 5 here in the States, but I've never seen an NTSC copy. I didn't hear about Striker though, except in the pages of 3DO magazine. I thought there was another UK soccer release also?

There was something odd about Defcon 5. I think there was something wrong with it.

Do you mean something wrong like a programing bug or something? (I read your review on your blog where you thought it booted up wrong) Or was there somthing wrong with the way Goldstar distributed it?

I played for ages - and nothing, appart from the things that came at me when I was in the turrets, ever turned up. It kept telling me to go to the control room - but didn't tell me where it was. So I visited every room and nothing happened.

I have a faint, possibly dubious, memory, that there was indeed something wrong with DEfcon 5...

I guess that could explain why Defcon 5 never saw a release here in the states. I'll have to pick up the UK copy & see for myself.

So is Defcon 5 confirmed as definitely a UK only release? I've had it on my US missing list for ages as it was on a list of US releases somewhere, but I've never seen it or any proof it was released in the US.

I was sorting through some more disks when I came across this. As many of the US advertisements indicated at the time and as evidenced by this disk, it looks as though a US NTSC version of Defcon 5 was poised to be released:

I actually really like this game. I was going to give it a try about a year ago and then read some bad reviews, so I put it on the back burner.
I gave it a run through a couple of days ago and I'm having quite a bit of fun with it.
Something about the mood of the game I find really appealling. Controlling station defenses through fairly impressive and detailed computer terminals or manually operating those defenses, multiple paths from point A to point B to evade intruders, a vast area to explore, etc. Also, it doesn't look bad at all, and the AI is adequate.

Defcon 5 was released in the U.S. on the PSX and possibly the Saturn. I have a CDR of the game(3DO version-it's either a copy of the UK release or an unreleased U.S. version, but it seems complete in any case)I was given by someone, the graphics rock and it seems like it should be a good first-person shooter, but the whole strategy side of the game and trying to make my way through the computer menus to do what needs to be done is just to complicated and confusing. I really want to get into the game, but before I can figure anything out or get anything done the base always gets overrun and my game ends. It's a real shame too. I really, really want to like the game. I've even tried playing with a strategy guide I got off the net, but it's just too boring to still try and figure out that I give up on it before I can get anywhere. Every time I try it I just end up sticking in Po'ed or Spacehulk instead to get my 3DO FPS fix.

I didn't know Striker was ever finished and published anywhere. I've seen an FMV of it on one of the demo discs, but that's it.It looks really cool, I wish I could get it, if it was ever finished and released somewhere.

Check out this thread I made about 3DO soccer titles. Striker is pictured there. 3DO Soccer Titles

I really can't get my head around defcon at all, I wander about not knowing what the hell i'm supposed to be doing, It probably doesn't help that the only version I could find was the german language version though :)

I have the English language version, and felt pretty much the same.

Yeah but at least you don't have some woman shouting at you in German everytime you try to open a door

I had a German lady shout at me once in a canteen in Germany. (Hanover) It was very scary. I moved from a long queue, to a short queue. I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't push-in, jump the queue or anything, but she shouted, a lot. So, i got back in the original queue. I don't speak any German. You have my sympathies.

I'm pretty sure Defcon 5 is easier to figure out with the instruction manual (it seems to include some sort of map). Without this manual, however, I'm afraid I won't get very far. Can anyone confirm this?

...I can confirm it's nigh on impossible without the map....

(Map you say?)

That's two of us. Let's invade somewhere! (no wait)

if you want to see some funny invasion jokes look up on youtube "gruen transfer new zealand"
The gruen transfer is an australian show that dissects advertising then puts ludicrous ideas to ad agencies for making ads

these ones advertise an australian invasion of new zealand!

check it out!

0% Navy
0% Airforce
0% infantry

100% There for the taking.

That hit the spot. I laughed so hard I cried.

Just one thing: You guys get the Queens birthday off? I don't.

yeah , every June we get a public holiday for the monarchs bday no matter when the actual birthday is!
technically she is still our head of state - we never officially suceded believe it or not - until the 1970's our anthem was still god save the queen/king!
but I think those mock commercials pretty much sum up aussie humour - the kiwis were not impressed and it caused a bit of a international incident when it was aired but you know what can they do (throw sheep at us ?)
oh well at least they gave us Russell Crowe , Sam Neil and Peter Jackson - not a bad roll call!
