Running out of ideas for a 3DO homebrew...

Post by blabla » Mon Feb 09, 2015 11:01 pm

As you can see in the homebrew section, i'm currently running out of ideas.
That, and i don't know what kind of games do you really like...

So i'm asking you : What games would like to see on the 3DO ?
It can be a game already out or even an original idea.

Post your suggestions, thoughts, non-sense... here

To be 100% candid, what I'd most like to see is translations of the existing Japanese and Korean 3DO games. Given the tortures that people go through to extract scripts from NES and Genesis games, and the fact that games like Doctor Hauzer allegedly have the script in plaintext on the CD, it's bizarre that no one's taken up the challenge of translating a game yet.

Beyond that, hmm...how about a port of Steel Harbinger? :D That game just screams "3DO" to me. But it's a fantasy to imagine porting it, obviously, especially without the source code.

More practically, how about a port of Spectre VR for Macintosh, or another one of the mid-1990s Mac games? The menus on a lot of 3DO games look like Mac shareware anyway, and obviously the official dev tools were Mac-based. Oxyd was another one I liked.

Here's one more thought: we got the first game in the Kingdom series on 3DO, but the sequel Shadoan was only on the CD-i (and PC/Mac). Could the assets from another version be used to put Shadoan on 3DO?

Similarly, we got Out of This World on 3DO, but not Heart of the Alien -- and apparently someone reverse-engineered HOTA, and source code is available. Maybe that's the most realistic possibility of all.

Anything you do will be most welcome!

A few ideas (trying to keep it in the single screen game design)...

A Bomberman Clone - up to 'x' no. of players using Daisy Chain!

An Arkanoid Clone - something akin to Impulse X for the Jaguar

A Death Tanks Clone - a single screen weapons trajectory based combat title. That would be cool!

A Qix clone - using HiRes 3DO related imagery as the stages etc ;)

A Pang Clone - again, using HiRes 3DO related imagery/3DO design elements

Thought these may be more within the scope of what you're trying to develop.

Hope this helps...

I always wanted to see more driving games, either 2D scaling or 3D, on the 3DO. Idk which (if any) have the source code released though and it would be really difficult to make one from scratch.

F1 GP had a lot of promise, but it's clearly unfinished.

Personally, I'd like to see a re-port of Doom. There are many, many different and lightweight versions of the Doom engine that people have made over the years for other systems, and also BurgerBecky released the source code to the existing 3DO version. I'd even be willing to bet she'd give you some pointers, if you asked her (also watch this). If you end up doing this, please use the 3DO-exclusive remixed (with a live band) music tracks. They're included in her source zip and are awesome. It'd be silly to leave out the 3DO version's best feature. :D

Now I'm making an extended version of 3DO Doom. I've added a savegame feature and some other improvements. Sadly, I'm stuck with REZFILE editing. :(

Awesome!

Also, blabla, sorry, I'm an idiot and didn't see your thread in the other subforum. Obviously you're well aware of the Doom situation.

Didn't saw this either until now.
Yes, i do know about 3DO Doom since the day it was released and i learned some things from it.

I'll let Versus working on Doom though :
he already did some good progress on it (he implemented better music playback and all) but it is still not ready for
let's say, custom wads and Bucker has yet to release the REZFile tools she promised.
(She also mentionned releasing the souce code for Wolf3D 3DO and Killing Time in the near future)

The Qix clone can be done now i think because i know how to draw pixels now.
I only need to find a good open-source implementation. (much like i did with my wip 3do tetris clone)

2D shoot 'em up?

R-Type? Something like that.

3DO has none. Well, one mini-game on an obscure japanese only import title.

blabla, do you have any interest at all in translating released games? If you can dump the script (and from what I understand several 3DO games are known to have the script in plaintext on the disc), then it shouldn't be too hard to find a translator. There are so many Japanese games (and a couple Korean ones) that would be a blast to play.

2 years has passed and i think i got to a point where i can port a fully-fledge game to the 3DO.
Check out Evil Australians for 3DO to see what i mean

I think i will start with a Bomberman clone next time

I find the 3DO lacks in a couple genres that were so prominent in the generation just before it:

Run and gun games
Shmups (both horizontal and vertical)
JRPGs
Overhead shooters
Beat em ups

Devs back then weren't content with just making a quality game, it instead needed to push the tech, but alas this meant we don't have a game like Contra, Final Fight, Raiden, etc.

How about a poke around at the 3do/PC/PSX Mortal Kombat assets/sources and seeing what can be salvaged.
What came after the Jaguar was the PS1 which for all it's greatness, ushered in corporate development and with it the bleached, repetitive, bland titles which for the most part we're still playing today. - David Wightman
