Goldstar cd drive (yep they're crap)

Post by Scarlettkitten » Thu Aug 02, 2012 11:26 pm

I've got this Goldstar 3DO and as per usual the CD drive is kaput, but this one is odd. I took the lid off to investigate because it makes a right racket and it appears the laser unit is being driven to the center constantly and clicking as it hits the middle over and over

Any ideas????

So, wait, the rod which moves the laser sled keeps turning then? If you move the laser to the top of the unit does it immediately start moving towards the center?

Exactly, it keeps turning and moving the laser towards the centre.

Have you tried making any potentiometer adjustments? When the system can't read a disc, it usually doesn't spin the disc nor move the laser, but perhaps the problem lies somewhere between? The laser sees a disc but can't quite read it and the system is attempting to move it into place?

Is the shaft still attached properly?

Can't say I've encountered this issue with an optical drive before. :\
