I really like some of these games.

GTA was awesome (so was the London expansion pack)
GTA 2 was awesome but a bit samey.
GTA 3 was the finest game to ever grace a screen.
GTA VC was boring
GTA SA was too far up it's own backside.
GTA 4 was a pile of turgid monkey pooh drudgery that typifies modern games.

hmm. Our opinions on this series differ a bit.

The first one was ok but it just couldn't keep my interest.

The second one I tried to go through the missions but it can get pretty difficult. I think I eventualy made it to the second area and got bored of the game.

GTA3 was just an awesome game. When I first played this game I couldn't stop. The story line kept me going and the gameplay was quite fun. Some missions could get difficult but if you planned it out you could get out of any difficult situation.

GTA VC took the formula of GTA3 and added much more stuff to do and new features. The backdrop was changed to the 80s and was done well, and as with all the 3d games, great story line.

GTA SA I think is where the series peaked. This game was packed. The game area was huge and each area differed dramaticly. There was insane amount of stuff added to the game untop of what the previous game had to offer and the story kept me playing once again.

GTA IV was the new era of GTA games. They were going for more realism this time around. A new game engine from the ground up and a new physics engine added to the realism. Unfortuntly sometimes the physics would act a little weird but it usualy added to the hilarous moment that was already happening. There was no more turning cars on a dime at full speed. You have to brake for turns and get used to driving a car that actually has physics. This made the online racing quite fun. That and the crazy people online would have me laughing all the time. They had a ton of time put into working this game but alot of features that GTA SA had were completly missing. I have a feeling that they were torn between delaying the game again or not adding the features and I think they ultimately just released the game. One more delay could of meant less sales and they would of probably got hit by the impending recession.

In conclusion I cant pick a favorite between SA and IV. They both have different good points to where I could go with either one. I usualy lean towards SA though but not by much. Ask me next week and i might say different. The next GTA game I think will have most of the SA features added back into the new game and will probably be the best GTA yet. But first...

Im actually interested to see how Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption goes. but maybe thats another topic in itself.

I only cared for the first one. When it went to 3D it was all bla to me.
