The next generation of handheld gaming ...
... leaves me w/a bunch questions. I guess my top 2 are ...
When will a new model 3DS come out that has a 2nd thumb pad built in (the Japanese add-on looks so ugly!)
and ...
How is Sony going to appease those of us w/a psp umd collection that we can't use on the Vita?

A few months afterward sound about right for Nintendo. I think thats when the new Monster Hunter is being released, so it would make since to have a new model w/the built in feature the game needs.
Sony makes me skeptical. I mean, whatever happened to the Psp Go?

All hand held gaming is shite.
I've had a DS, PSP, iPhone and now Tablet. The PSP was alright, only because I could convert Silent Hill from PS1 to PSP. SO that doesn't count. Since the game was PS1 game that 'just happened' to run on a handheld. I enjoyed some other PSP games: Ridge Racers, Ace Combat, Kill Zone... but as you can see they are all 'big' games crammed on to a small fiddly device.
My wife swears by her DS, and plays Zelda, Professor Layton, and I'll admit to playing Nintedogs but...
Blind Freddie could have seen the PSP Go was going to fail.
3DS shows how fickle the wider consumer market is.

i stopped at the GBAsp, i dont care for the double screens, and i especially hate anything in 3D (and yes ive played those machines)
now im playing my Sega Nomad, so i can play NHL97/98 again without having to hook up my genesis to a tv
i had an atari lynx but i re-sold it because i would never play it
my handhelds in order and when i got them
Gameboy 1994 (only had 2 games and i lost my Tetris game)
Game Gear 1997
Sega Nomad 1997
Atari Lynx 2004 - sold 2008
GBAsp 2007
in other words the next gen can do what they want as im set for handhelds

The 3ds is a good system, Mario 3d land is a worthy addition to the 3ds library. Resident Evil is surprisingly good and shows off the systems capabilities really well as you'll realise that the 3ds is a big tech step up from the ds.
I love handhelds, Atari Lynx is still very impressive even today, but these new handheld/PC in your hand things just seem like overkill.
My Dingoo keeps me very happy.

Re: The next generation of handheld gaming ...
If I were you I'd wait for the Vita to get jailbroken and simply download any UMD-only game. I'm not trying to encourage illegal activity and you should certainly also buy a physical copy of the UMD game if you feel so inclined, but if you want the ultimate Sony handheld, you might have to do that; not to mention emulation with a decent chance of someone jumping on the 3DO. If what I'm typing isn't allowed I'll be happy to take it down.Trev wrote:... leaves me w/a bunch questions. I guess my top 2 are ...

I'm leaning towards a 3DS right now. I like it's library better so far, the price is much nicer ... mainly though, I just compare the amount of time I've spent playing my Psp vs. my DSi ... no comparison really. Not only have I spent a ton more time w/my Dsi, but I have probably 3 times as many titles (not counting umd movies) When Nintendo releases an XL model, I'm sure I'll scoop one up.

Im not so sure this will happen soon. The reason the screens are at the size they are right now is because that is pretty much the effective zone for glasses free 3d from what I hear. Maybe they can improve upon it, but only time will tell.Trev wrote:When Nintendo releases an XL model, I'm sure I'll scoop one up.
PS. I still enjoy my 3ds very much. The activity log says I have 442 hours of use in various apps and games. I've had it since it was released. I do watch quite a bit of netflix on it but I play alot of games too.

I bet the screen size will change eventually. Who knows how much technology will improve before the next 3DS unit. And every Nintendo handheld prior had atleast one change in screen size, and several re-designs/updates.

I didn't know they had glasses free 3d TVs now. I wonder how poor the view angle is on those, and if there is a distance sweet spot. Do you have link for one of these TVs? I'd be interested in reading more on it.Trev wrote:
Perhaps ... yet tv's are using the same tech found in the 3DS so I'm not sure how that really factors.
Got an extra 10 grand?

It better be improved, as I've read nothing but meh reviews over the earlier prototype.
