				Here's just a thought.
Since the spammers only seem to be posting threads, why not disable the ability to post threads until the user has acquired 2-3 posts or something like that.

Not a bad idea, however I wouldn't want to restrict any genuine 3DO folks from making new threads.
I'll find a solution soon enough. Just for the record this IS a human spam problem. At least we dealt with the automated spam!

but if people are genuine 3do'ers they shouldnt mind posting 2 or 3 times before being allowed to make a thread
i visit one celeb pic site that wont let any links be posted untill they make 5 posts first

We are dealing with the same crap on a forum that I am a mod at. It is unbelievable the amount of human spam we have been getting hit with as of late.

Best solution is to put new members into a user group that requires moderation of new posts. If it's not spam, auto-promote to full members. But I doubt that this is possible with phpBB...

				http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captcha
You need a stronger implementation of CAPTCHA.
A lot of newer spambots have methods for reading the
altered text. You are also using a much older version of
PHPBB. If you upgrade to the latest version (takes about
5-10 minutes) and implement some strong CAPTCHA
plugins your spammer issues will be OVER.
PERIOD.
