Is this game any good ? Reviews are certainly mixed and I've always doubted Atari's hype machine.
Most current PCs will not run it and the PS2 and Wii versions are certainly cut down - thoughts anyone?

My PS3 game budget was spent on Initial D Extreme Stage, I was gonna wait for AiTD to hit the £20 mark before buying it.

For me I was put off with the try every object with every other object to see what happens. Harks back to the old days of text adventures that went something like this:

>N
>You have gone north. You are in a room with doors to the North, South and East.
>E
>You have gone east. You are in a room with doors to the North, West and South. There is a large wooden table and songbird in the room.
>Hit songbird with table.
>Sorry. I do not understand.
>Hit table.
> Sorry. I do not understand.
> Eat Songbird.
> Sorry. I do not understand.
> Eat table.
> Sorry. I do not understand.
> Stand on table.
> Sorry you got on to the table and stood on the songbird which was on the table. You have slipped from the table and broken your neck. Game over. The correct solution was dismantle table and use table legs to make rythmic tune until songbird sings the ancient celtic tune and reveals the magical door to the north east we didn't mention before.

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

So, erm, no. I actually replayed Alone in the Dark on the 3DO recently and loved it.

Yeah , I hear what your saying - put it on a pc at work as I felt the ps2 version wouldn't do it justice (which it doesn'T) just to try before I splurge on it. It just seems too contrived - its atmosphere by numbers not by creativity. Each mini game by starting/hot wiring vehicles becomes annoying especially as it is random - no way of telling which vehicle is going to sound the horn and alert your enemies or progress you further.I do like your comparison to text adventures , I remember playing hitchikers guide on the VIC20 many years ago and struggling to progress even when I already knew what was supposed to happen!
It is gorgeous though and I hope does not put the developers off tackling the much missed adventure genre again.
It is at least better than the crap movie and at least tried to capture the essence of the original.
Now where did I put my 3do copy............................................

In years to come, and I'm absolutely serious, I think the original will be considered a work of art.

(in some way!)
