Trade news from OZ

Just thought I'd let you guys know some of the talk at a recent industry conference I attended here in Australia.
Firstly sales percentages - Nintendo now control 51% of hardware sales here with a fairly even split between wii / ds . Sony combined ps2,ps3,psp makes up @ 38% (20 ps2 , 8psp , 10ps3)
remaining 12% is xbox - please note PC gaming is not included in these figures.
Without sounding like I'm blowing Nintendos trumpet they've achieved this despite having inferior hardware and relatively high prices (wii is now more expensive than 360 arcade) - why - because their games cater to everyone. This has not been lost on the others as their new release schedules reflect.
Wii - big release news is that world in crisis' release is now immenent! This has been hyped from day one and is running way behind schedule - the game is finished and is just awaiting classification in each region prior to release. They are also jumping on the rock bandwagon (excuse the pun) with a game that utilises the wii fits as drums!
Ps2- er Disney singstar - and thats about it - oh how the mighty have fallen
PSP an increased range of Buzz logo brain training titles (I think the white flag of surrender is appropriate) - no confirmation on the GPS add on that was tauted early in the year - perhaps the white flag on this as well
PS3 - heaps of original titles like resistance 2 , motostorm 2 , singstar 2 (get the picture).Resistance looks good - saw the beta up and running but its more of the same just bigger. The one shining light - Little Big Planet - this is possibly the best platform game ever and possibly the only reason I would buy a PS3. This truly rocks and yes I played the beta!Asked if the backwards compatibility aspect would be perfected and released as either a download or option - answer - NO not ever
XBOX 360 - similar story GOW is back , Lips is a singstar type game , more viva pinata , but its hopes are lying squarely on Too Human. Good game, played it for a few hours the other day (had a pre release copy) the whole viking aspect is nice twist but ultimately seen it all before.Like I said good , but not great.
EA - they were the only third party publisher with their own stand - obviously the sims 3 is looking good and will dominate the world with mediocrity but Spore is truly something. I love Civilisation - being able to grow a community from stone age to space age always appealed to me but Spore - what a concept - embryo to space conquest- brilliant! Asked the fresh faced rep if EA had any game show based titles in development and was told YES which was quickly followed by a "how did you know?" - I was just guessing that EA like everyone else would be looking at ways to cash in on the whole family trend and may looking at its roots (twisted , zhadnost etc) - it seems ny guess may be right
So I hope there is some info in here that may be of interest - none of it ground shattering exclusive but at least shows some of the trends appearing and the direction gaming is heading whether we like it or not! :!: 8)

The Wii, in it's natural habitat.

PS: Wii fit, is not a game.

Someone link me to World in Crisis.

"World in Crisis Nintendo" Typed into google comes up with nothing.

The world was heading this way, in a gaming sense, in 1979 with the Atari 2600. And that ended with a bump.

The Ipod was a fad, the Wii, I predict is the same fad.

You Nintendo die-hards shouldn't crow too hard. It'll end in tears, mark my words.

What I don't get, is how come the Wii is included in games, with the PS3 and 360, when for the average die hard gamer it can only muster around 7 or 8 games worth the effort if you also have a 360/PS3, but the PC isn't included?

Also Nintendos release schedule for '08: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/ar ... ?id=177020

now now be nice! just because you brits beat us in the olympic medal tally for the first time since 1988 doesn't give you flaming rights

The wii title is Disaster : World in Crisis

Don't get me wrong the wii is definitely not for hardcore gamers(which is why I have a PC as well) but you know some games benefit from the wii mote - initial reviews of force unleashed give thumbs up to the wii control even though the graphics are naff compared to other platforms. Also the same was said of the new alone in the dark.

Ghost squad is pretty cool too!

I doubt if it would handle street fighter IV when released though.
At least I get to play the PS3 at work.

Also those figures also included 35000 PS3's given away by sony with their TV's.Average PS3 purchaser buys 3 games a year - XBOX 360 gamers buy 8. Backs up my own sales experience that at least half the PS3's that leave my store are for playing bluray movies (its still the cheapest bluray player on the aussie market - go figure).
maybe if panasonic had of shipped the FZ-1 with vcd adapter as standard the high asking price would have been partly justified.

I don't make up the figures these were tabled by GFK an independent survey company used by retailers here

so there it is - and if anyone insinuates that I am a nintendo fanboy again I'll personally give them a big sloppy kiss and you really don't want that!

It would confirm my suspicions about Nintendo fanboys ;)

So, Nintendo bashing rears it's ugly head ... again! (reminds me of the days of Genesis vs. Snes)

Atleast here on this forum the gripes at the big N are legit though. Not claptrap like 'I hate Nintendo cause it had girly games' or some nonsense like that. Oh wait a min ...

P.S. Am I banned Kid?

Why yes. Yes you are :)

It's often difficult for me to see through murky-reddish hew of rabid fanboyism (for the 3DO and Playstation) and be objective. It taints my judgement. I know that.

The high points of Nintendo ownership for me have be Luigi's mansion, Paper Mario 2, running Sweet Home on a NES emulator and, erm, oh-yes, Resident Evil 4 the way the world intended.

The low points however: Only ever switching my Wii on twice. Not being able to 'fix' the blurry image on my n64. Not 'getting' for all the hundreds of pounds I spent on every game, the 'magic' of Zelda. (Mrs 3DOkid loves Zelda mind you) Not really finding any of Nintendo games enticing. The DS was a low point for me. I didn't fall-in-love-with Mario Karts DS. Brain games were alright. Nintendogs, ironically, I enjoyed. Although, with my mindset, the option to put it in a bin-liner and chuck in the canal would have really sold the game to me.

People bang on about game-play, but all I want is extreme violence, comedy violence, gun violence, cars, spaceships and naked women. Once a game has these things, then I worry game-play. In fairness, not Nintendos strong points.

Nintendos rise-and-rise with the Wii just makes me feel like my 1980s heavy-metal-smoking-drinking-womanising-rock-n-roll ideals are no-longer cool. Which obviously isn't true.

To compound it, the Wii is just a "Gamecube Plus" which goes against my harder-faster-better-bigger mentality. It's just all wrong. Wrong i tell you.

Actually, this past E3 didn't instill in me quite as much confidence as years past. It does seem the Nintendo is flipping from success w/the critics to success financially. Still, w/few exceptions (RE 5, MGS 4) I find the Wii has more of what I'm looking for than either th3 360 or PS3 ... so far.

Honestly? I'm quietly flogging off all my 'this gen' games (PS3, Wii, 360) because I am utterly bored with everything that's been released.

The this gen games I have enjoyed the most have been: Ace Combat X on the PSP - which is awesome, honestly, it makes Ace Combat 6 on the 360 look rubbish! (And that's pretty good!)
