Can someone recommend some import titles

Post by mosul210 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 8:41 pm

Hey all, I was a big 3DO fan back in the day and as a 2nd time 3DO owner I am starting a new collection. I am very familiar with the domestic releases, but unfamiliar with imports. Can someone recommend some import titles that I should become familiar with. Thanks.

Hmm... depends. Do you speak/read Japanese or Korean?

I've been having a lot of fun with Macaroni Interactive and Sailor Moon.

English friendly imports?

- Autobahn Tokio.
- Dr Hauzer (plus my FAQ of cause)
- Pyramid INtruder (May have been release in the USA actually)
- Virtual Cameraman 1 to 5.
- Twinkle Knights (needs a Japanese machine mind you)
- Short Warp.
- Crayon Shin Chans puzzle game (pretty good actually)
- Virtual Puppet Reika
- F1GP
- Taiketsu rooms!

...perhaps some others...

All of what Kid listed are good choices, Virtual Cameraman is for looking at girls BTW. I would also like to add some of my favorites that he didn't mention. I wish I could suggest Yu Yu Hakusho because I love the series but this game is not very good. go with the first SNES version

D's Diner Director's Cut
Battle Pinball
Blue Forest Story Monogatari (if you read Japanese)
Crayon Shin-Chan Puzzle Daimaou no Nazo (Kure Yon Shin Chan)
Deep Blue Fleet (I really don't recall this but I think others like it)
Fireball !!
Hello Kitty Toy Box (ok maybe not)
Montana Jones
N.O.B. - Neo Organic Bioform
Policenauts (if you read Japanese)
Seal of the Pharaoh.iso
Super Street Fighter II X - Grand Master Challenge
Wacky Races
Wacky Races 2 - In Space
The Yakyuuken Special (for simple pervertedness)

I'm going to recommend Defcon 5. A lot of people will not agree with me, but I liked it on the 3DO. I will probably do a write up on it when I get the time.

The policenauts pilot disk is kinda neat. I don't know any Japanese and I was still able to test out all the little features and see character art, and some interviews.

I'm not sure what the "Game" tab is for though.

I've heard some good things about D's Diner - is this an English title?

Well it's just "D" un the US & UK, you don't really need to know Japanese to play the Director's Cut but the story is good so you should play one in English first or you'll ruin the story.

Did you ever play with N.O.B a lot?

Yeah but I can't say I'm very good at it. Even on Easy lol

PS. I would suggest it if you haven't tried it, but then again that's why I put it in the list.

I've played it a bit. it's fustrating and yet in someway brilliant. It's very different from other games and looks, in stills, wonderful. I also couldn't figure out what i was supposed to be doing.

Belzerion is one of the best imports I've played, and I was able to finish it w/out any knowledge of the japanese tongue. Not all that rare either.

A few others that have not been mentioned ...

Ultraman - Gorgeous 2d fighter w/short shooting segments also.

Takeru - Not a game, but a digital comic book w/some interesting artwork. Press the A button is all you need to know.

Murphy's Law (TV) - Option to switch the language to full english is available

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting which I'll add if & when I think about them. Check 3DOKid's reviews (that's what I do)

YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT...
time to blow this one off *ahem* and ask the magic question:

Has anyone got any new JP exclusive 3DO stuff to add to this list; highly playable/enjoyable without knowledge of the native tongue?

Yes, some of WARP's games. Flopon the Space Mutant (predecessor to Trip'D), Flopon World (mini-game collection with a pseudo RPG-SHMUP), and Short WARP (another mini-game collection, but with a lot more variety).

Tower of Puzzle is another one (not by WARP though). It's a traditional mind-teazer puzzler. Completely in English, too. Seems to be fairly rare though, I've only seen it pop up twice when I've been looking.

One I've been wondering about is Kurokishi no Kamen/Ghost Hunter Series. It's never mentioned as an import-friendly title, but just going by the short clip of it I've seen on YouTube, it doesn't seem like it would be difficult to figure out. Anyone here played it?

Never played, but here are 3DOKid's comments from the old import sticky ...
Ghost hunter series.- Story and menu's in Japanese - however, it's suprising how far you can get not being able to read or speak the language. Score 3.
- Easy enough to play. Pressing the icons and seeing what happens actually works - difficult but not impossible. Score 3. ( Go - on! Import it for the box art!)

I also don't see Royal Pro Wrestling mentioned much, so I'll mention it now. An import very worthy of consideration.
Most wanted - Eye of Typhoon, 3DO Magazines issues #14 & #15, Pro Stadium, Defcon 5
