Put all 3DO fighters into order of greatness

Post by jesus 666 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 10:34 pm

Put all the 3DO fighting games you've played into order of greatness.

I'm interested to know realistically how people think they compare to games of the time too (the best 16-bit games)

OK, i'm going to attempt this, I haven't played them all yet so it's not a full list

1. Street Fighter 2 (the best version of the best fighter for the time)

2. Samurai Shodown (easily stacks up against most other fighters from the mid 90s and apart from the Neo Geo's version the 3DO is the best)

3. Sailor Moon (Street Fighter clone, really not sure how it stacks up maybe a little below average, though i'm thinking the gameplay would be helped by 60hz)

4. Yu Yu Hakusho (below the average MD or SNES fighting game, looks like it was thrown together in half hour)

5. Way of the Warrior (plays bad, looks bad, terrible characters, shamefull in comparison to 16-bit games)

6. Rise of the Robots (someone's idea of a bad joke)

I've never played ultraman (looked really bad) I've never played Balls or Primal Rage either (I have tons of reviews which all agree thay're really terrible games)

I really don't know what to make of Sailor Moon or Yu Yu Hakusho as I'm wondering if they look and play better on NTSC, on my console they look close to being MUGEN levels of graphics and animation (card board cut out juddering along with two frames of animation)

Well, I can only rate/rank the ones I've played so here goes:

1) Samurai Shodown - The best transfer aside from the NEO-GEO
2) Super Street Fighter II Turbo - Best version released of any system
3) Way of the Warrior - The game play is a little weak, but the soundtrack is awesome
4) Ballz - Not crazy about the artistic visuals, but the game play is pretty good

Finally the game that never got released - Mortal Kombat....this was one reservation that never got filled.

1 Street Fighter
2 Sam Shodown
3 Ballz
4 Sailor Moon
5 Primal Rage
6 Way of the Warrior
7 Supreme Warrior
8 Rise of the Excrement ....er sorry Robots
These are the ones I own in order I can't comment on the others - unlike some experts I prefer to dis after I play not just because someone said on the intenet that all things 3DO suck

Maybe i'll get some more 3DO games to make a fuller list of fighting games, it's just that there's too many games out there to waste time playing the awful ones, I'll usually check a game out if there's a lot of disagreement between one person and another and someone sounds like they're making a good case, which isn't really happening with Ballz, it has universal panning and the only people who seem to think it's alright are 3DO owners (and the actual 3DO game critics hated it worse than anyone, you've got to wonder whether it's worthwhile when the magazine you owned in your childhood specifically warns you against buying a game saying it one of the top 5 worst titles on the system)

I was obsessed with fighting games back in the day and there were limited few of any quality on the CD32 that I had prior to the 3DO. I played Ballz to death and was pleasantly surprised with its depth - it was very underrated. I had Rise on the CD32 as soon as it was released too but it could never be accused of being underrated
Its personal preference - I take every review with a grain of salt.
Ballz was fun but was no SFII
Rise wasn't even fun
Its all relative - I was glad to try before I buy with the great demo discs that used to be freebies with the mags. I usually based my purchases on these not reviews or hype. Rise turned me off hype forever.

Oh I get it. I'm supposed to create an order - okay.

- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on an NTSC Machine.
- Sailor Moon
- Yu Yu Hashiko
- Samurai Shodown.
- Ultraman (yes, ultraman)
- Shadow. (this high for nostalgic reasons)
- Way of the Warrior
- Ballz (Nice concept but...)
- Primal Rage is last because that idiot argued with me on my blog and I said it was rubbish and he said it wasn't and when I think about it i get all worked up. :)

I would put EYE OF TYPHOON just below SAMURAI SHOWDOWN in terms of playability, but equal to Sailor Moon on overall graphics.

Whoa that game looks excellent! I take it from the other posts around here that it's pretty much impossible to buy though.

On another note, I think Sailor Moon is a pretty good game (and probably a lot better on 60hz) and has grown on me, but is somewhat displaced by the excellent port of Street Fighter II the 3DO has, I don't know if I could recommend it as there's little reason to buy it over/as well as Street Fighter unless you're a big Sailor Moon fan.

The arcade ports are the best fighters ... SFII, Sam Sho, & PR in that order.

Best import is easily Ultraman, worst is Yu Yu.

Ballz, Supreme Warrior, & Sailor Moon are middle of the pack.

WOTW & ROTR are neck & neck for last ... both have great visuals but grossly inadequate gameplay. Which is worse? Well, both look awesome, but ROTR Queen soundtrack wipes the floor w/White Zombie. Still, WOTW has a larger cast of characters, and better 2 player mode. Hmmm...

WOTW is worse!

Oh, and it is really more sport, but Foes of Ali is awesome!

P.S. Before anyone asks, I haven't played Shadow ... yet.

Allow me a typo or two dozen. After all hukt un fahnix werkt fer mi. :) (Ok, very old joke. heh)

サムライスピリツ

I CAN READ THIS!

(those Japanese lessons are finally paying off)

Of cause it would have have been infinitely more impressive if the English translation wasn't next to it. But I could, honest.

Does Foes of Ali count as a fighter? That was pretty decent, a little bit random, but decent.

Well like I said it is more sport, but I can't pass up a chance to plug this great (but underrated) game.

Oops didn't see you'd mentioned it there, but yeah I agree. It's pretty much the ancestor of the current Fight Night games, and at the time was damn good. I was surprised it never got ported to anything else.
