Multi-platform games

Post by T.A.P. » Tue Nov 17, 2009 6:20 am

Has anyone here ever attempted to compare the 3DO version of games to their counterparts on other systems?

I'm especially curious to know how the 3DO version of games like Brain Dead 13, Cannon Fodder, Dragon's Lair, Flashback, and Space Ace compare to their ports on the Jaguar in particular, but really any game that was released 3DO and others I'd like to know about.

Here's the ones I know about from experience and the best console for them:

Doom: Jaguar, at least, back in the 90's.
Return Fire: 3DO
Samurai Shodown: 3DO, if you don't want to buy a Neo Geo.
The Need For Speed: 3DO
Wolfenstein: 3DO, although the Jaguar one is so different its practically a new game.

What about the rest of you? Any words of wisdom?

I know Primal rage and super Street Fighter 2 were the best ports on 3DO definately!

We were checking out BrainDead 13... haven't finished the comparison but 3DO is in the lead.

Dragon's Lair is on Blu-ray now in case you didn't know.

The 3DO version of Starfighter was far superior to the PSX/DOS/Saturn versions.

There is a slightly improved version of the 3DO version for RISC OS based PC's, the original version before the console versions was also available solely on RISC OS.
Even if the morrow is barren of promises, nothing shall forestall my return.

I also believe that Virtuoso's console release was only on the 3DO.

Anyone know if the 3DO versions of Cannon Fodder, Flashback, and Theme Park are better than their Jaguar equivalents?

Flashback is best on the 3DO. Rich cd audio & gorgeous cinema cut scenes. Control seems a smidge tighter too, although that just may be preference in controller.

The Jag FB seems to have rather weak audio even for a cartridge version. It seems ... I'm not quite sure how to describe it. A bit out of synch or delayed or something. The Genesis cart even seems better. :?

Nevertheless I'd place both among the consoles best. FB is a top 25 3DO game & a top 5 Jag game. :D

I don't think I've ever played the Jag version of Theme Park, so can't compare it to my 3DO copy.

Believe it or not, I've yet to play Cannon Fodder for any console.

A general rule of thumb is that games designed for a system are much better than games ported to it. Just about all the EA games are superior on the 3DO (Wing Commander , NFS , Space Hulk etc) because of this. The same goes for the Crystal Dynamics stuff especially Gex. PC & Mac ports were reasonably intact due to the fact that 3DO benefitted from having an operating system they could be written to in a similar way. Also the Amiga ports came out ok too......But Cannon Fodder , and Theme Park are essentially the same on the Jag and 3DO , - the Amiga CD32 actually has the best versions. Flashback's FMV sequences are nicer on the 3DO compared to the Jag but the game itself is nearly identical.

They are all however superior to any Mega CD game just on the colour pallette alone.

Space Hulk is better on the 3DO than the Playstation, though the PC version is pretty much identical and probably edges it slightly.

I find the 3DO version slightly better than the PC version. Of course this lends it's self to the softening that a television adds. But the intro of the genestealer breaking through the screen does have more appealing audio to me on the PC.
