Your "other' hobbies?

Post by oldskool » Tue Apr 20, 2010 3:23 am

So, other than video gaming, what other things do you guys enjoy doing? I am into motorsports. Modifying cars and whatnot for racing purposes. I HAD a Mazda RX-7 Turbo which was really fun, I used to drag race it (I know, it's a great road course car but.. ).

I am also into mini bikes. I just recently swapped out the pathetic motor in my mini bike with a 6.5 Horse Honda (chinese clone).. it's a lot of fun! 8)

What about you guys?

My money in the last couple of years has been spent on "adventure flights" in old military aircraft, with a flight often costing the price of new console for only 30 minutes in the air.

It's a pretty expensive and only occasionally fulfilled hobby, and the range of aircraft to fly in is limited to Warbirds that have obviously 2 seats which makes the range kind of limited. :?

I'm aiming to eventually have a flight in a CAC Mustang (same as P-51 Mustang, but built in Australia) and maybe a P-40 Kittyhawk. There are a few other types to try as well. But with the fame of aircraft types, comes the cost. A 15 minute flight in a Mustang costs typically over $1500 Australian. This is why I don't have some of the rare cool sh!t that some of you collectors have for various consoles.

That's a pretty cool and different interest to have. Sounds like fun.

Musician and songwriter. Mostly Guitar and bass, but some drums and keys too. Now that I am not working I have been playing guitar like a madman. I haven't had Calluses like I have on my hand right now in years.

I think I recall a song that you posted here once, thought it was pretty good! Mind posting it again in this thread?

He sounds ever-so posh when he plays. Like a proper on-the-telly guitarist :)

From a previous post about members cars you may have noticed that I have had a passion for restoring them. In my younger days I held an Autosport licence and used to compete in Hill Climbs - I do neither now due to cost but cars are definitely a big part of who I am.

@Tinman - that is awesome - I have always had an interest in military aircraft having grown up near an Air Force Base and my living room actually overlooks an old WWII base! One of my fondest memories of being in the Army Reserves was working guard duty at an air show and getting to see Sydney from the back of an Army Caribou with the door down! Every year the old Air Base holds a heritage event - I forgot this year only to be reminded when a WWII Grumman came flying towards my house from across the water at extremely low level....very cool!

As for other interests - I love anything to do with the game of cricket - I still play from time to time and will happily watch a five day Test from start to finish. I've even been known to don the whites every now and then myself!

I wish I could sing or dance or play an instrument but alas the Gods have fosaken me on that one - but I do paint!

Well that's it for me :)

Sadly I no longer own any but my weapon of choice was a 1969 Mini Cooper S with a modified 1.4litre MG motor and a fibreglass tilt front.

It was legally street registered ! It's the red one in the post I mentioned.

I used to be pretty heavy into cars myself, especially in high school. It's one of the reasons I loved The Need For Speed so much on the 3DO.

Generally speaking, I love anything tech. Science and math are also subjects I enjoy greatly.
One of the results of these combined interests is my work with robotics.
Here are some random pics I grabbed real quick off of my desktop and photobucket.
I have other robots that I have built from scratch and have entered into various contests, but they aren't as sexy looking as these.

Quagmire, sounds like you mostly play the keys? or maybe you use midi to write songs? Do you have any clips of original stuff you wrote?

Cool tracks! If you ever want to collaborate on something, let me know. I love recording guitar parts to exsisting material. I get sick of having to record all the parts all the time. lol. Someday I'll find a band.

Quagmire, that Secret of Mana track was just beautiful! I wish I could play like that.
