Potential rampage prevented

Post by NikeX » Thu Sep 16, 2010 8:28 pm

This happened two weeks before. It took me and my girlfriend
a time to digest this.
The chance that anyone of my former colleagues read this is very low.
I'm a special needs carer (people with autism and so on)
and I was on my night vigil.

Suddenly the door of the house oppened and a colleague entered.
He says "Hi, don't be surprised ... can we talk?"
I thought o.k., let's do this. Strange... but, let's do this.

We sat together, began to talk, I know him for 2 years. Then he all at once stares at me and says:
"You know, sometimes I have these
thoughts and feelings. At home I think: How about taking a knife and
killing the colleagues."
I thought immediately: This is no noke, and if it would be, it wouldn't
be funny. So I thought to myself, to be cool, do not reinforce his thinking
and talking, just listen, play the listener, be cool, cool, cool.

And this went on for two hours. The full program: He talked about
poison and other things, I do not mention here.
5 minutes after he was gone, I called the call-out service and informed
them about the situation.
The next early morning the head came and I told him the whole
story.
The colleague got furloughed and his keys detached. He is now in
therapy.
I quit the job, because of the latest developments including this
highlight and got a new one. New city of course.

I do the same type of work - I am definitely hearing you - I think a potential situation was indeed avoided

Wow. I'm never moaning about my job on here again. Some people have proper jobs, with proper issues and proper responsibilities. I apologise.

I have absolutely no idea how I would have handled this.

You're a hero, and I'm glad you are okay NikeX.

Thank you for your words, BryWi, 3DOKid.
mattyg never knew you were working in the same. So we're the two of us.
I don't know if I'm a hero. And I tell you why:

Time will tell if I damaged his life or helped him in the end.
And this is very hard.
Maybe some of you know similar situations or feelings.
Disturbs my concentration at the new work sometimes.

Altough the colleagues were in shock after they were told about this,
I think they have forgotten me already. Not the worst scenario.

Judging from your first post I think you did the right thing, I can't imagine how I would have handled that situation.

As someone w/a brother who has special needs, dependent on others, I'm glad to know there are people like you NikeX. Good job.

My reaction would have been to call the police and then hide in the toilets. I doubt I could have remained calm.

One hour ago my heart was in my mouth. My girlfriend told me, that three hours ago, there was a rampage in the city I work now: Lörrach!
I cannot believe this! But it's true:
http://www.news24.com/World/News/Woman- ... l-20100919
http://www.n-tv.de/panorama/Vier-Tote-b ... 25216.html
4 dead, and one policeman is in mortal danger.
But it wasn't "him", it seems a woman has shot with an automatic weapon.
And there was a explosion. Life is crazy!
Only one km from my new work.
I don't know if this news is big enough for international coverage.
And yesterday my former boss told me via e-mail that "he" eventually gets a 2nd chance.
Folks, I feel sick. Bye for now.

A second chance not to be insane? Isn't insane a lifetime membership? Like smokers international and the Freemasons?

I'd call the police at this stage.

I deal primarily with children - so the relative government dept would have stepped in here and requested a psych assesment before reinstating.

We get the kids who are too dangerous for schools or are too difficult for foster carers - we work one on one in a residential house 24 hours a day with them.
On the disability side we take them on for as long as needed - we have many approaching their 30s and 40s whose autism or mental disabalities render them too violent for institutions.

I definitely understand Nike
