New 3DO owner... and retro game remixer
Hello everyone,
Well, I took the first step and ordered an FZ-10 from The Goat Store which should be here next week or so as well as a handful of games to get my collection started. That being said, I stumbled accross this board and figured I'd drop in and say hi as I'll be lurking around quite a bit I'm sure.
I've always been curious about this system since I was a kid, but like many of you the price tag kept me away from it when younger. Upon recently randomly checking out some gameplay footage on youtube of various games in action and learning that some iterations are the best versions of some of my favorite games avaialble (Out of this World, Super Wing Commander, etc), I decided to take the plunge. I kept my first batch of games coming with the console within my comfort zone as they're all games I've either played via the PC or am somewhat familiar with. I've already come up with a huge list and honestly haven't been this excited about starting a new collection since I re-purchased my TG-16 5 years ago. So, I've got the following games coming with the system:
Return Fire - brand new for $9... a steal in my book and I love the game anyway. Played the hell out of it on the PC.
Myst - a staple... and I've actually only ever owned the Nintendo DS
version of this game. Figured what the hell as it was only $4 including the box / instructions.
Walaie - for some reason always fascinated me as a kid, figured why not.
Wing Commander 3 - played IV... but somehow skipped 3.
Rebel Assault - what can I say, I'm a huge star wars nerd at heart and a sucker for the games set in the universe.
My next purchase will most likely be Out of this World, but I'm still not sure yet.... Star Control II if I can find it for a decent price.
Now, you're all probably wondering about the "retro game remixer" bit. Truth be told I'm a pro freelance composer / sound guy in the game industry... feel free to visit my webpage listed in my sig below. That said, I'm also VERY active over at Overclocked Remix and have remixed a slew of games which are also on the 3DO. My remixes basically take these themes and re orchestrate them making them more fitting for a hollywood film.... orchestral music is my specialty... think Hans Zimmer.
You 3DO'ers will definitely enjoy my take on Flashback, Wolfenstein 3D, and Out of this World for sure:

Wolfensten - Blazkowiczs Great Escape

Hello matey
That is what we call an eclectic collection of games.
Wing Commander III is an awesome game, much better than 4. And Another (out of this) world is the best version. Ignoring the anniversary release.
You are on your own with Myst - I never liked it. But then, I never gave it much of a chance either.
And when I'm online with a PC, and not a phone, I'll take a look at your remixes.
Welcome aboard

Wow Rich, I'm listening right now and these are AWESOME! I'm in the 3rd min of Super Metroid and I'm blown away. Shadowgate is next as I type this...
oh wow...
Shadowgate is really inventive. I don't know too many people who have actually played this game either. At least not on the NES.

Thanks for the warm welcome!
Well, my FZ-10 arrived in the mail today and I'm very excited to finally check out Wing Commander III and then follow that play session up with some return fire.
I think for my next title I want to try an FPS out... but want to stray from my comfort zone a bit (so no Wolf 3D or Doom). Any solid suggestions?
As I'm a HUGE fan of the Eye of the Beholder series I was thinking Slayer or Deathkeep (despite their difficulty). I'm also leaning towards Killing Time as I think it looks like a blast.
Thoughts?

Awesome, glad you finally got your 3DO. Now you will enjoy what many of us have been enjoying since it's release!
By the way! Love the remixes! Some of it sounds so real, like you had a real orchestra working for ya? What programs do you use to build your music? I have messed around a bit over the years myself, but of course nothing of this calibur! Much respect to you.
Welcome to the club.
Oh yeah, for FPS, I honestly don't think that was the 3DO's forte', but there are a few decent ones. Of course Wolfenstein. Doom - well, some will say it's "OK", some will say it's absolute garbage. Then you got Killing Time. Killing Time *IS* a good game, some people don't like the choppiness of the graphics, but I don't think it's TOO bad. I have both Slayer and Deathkeep, and they are quite the awesome games, and probably have the best graphics when it comes to 3DO FPS's - I think. But their difficulty is insane, which is actually quite a nice break from all the easy RPG's that are out there now. Monster Manor is pretty cool if you like Wolfenstein. To me, it's pretty much a Wolfenstein clone.

Thanks for the suggestions and kind words! I think I see Killing Time in my future.... followed by Defcon 5, if I can track a copy down!
I ended up playing for like 4 hours last night... this is definitely my new favorite old school system for sure. Return Fire is like crack (and the classical music works all too well), and WC III is astoundingly good so far. It's amazing to me how good the performances are! I know from experience that getting well known actors to give you a good vocal performance for a game is hard enough.... the filmed performances in WC III are pretty damn good.
Oldskool..
Thanks! ALL of my music is sample based and come from sample libraries... some of which are custom. It's all how you master the music, and which sample libs you utilize.... definitely get what you pay for there. Here's an abbreviated list of what I use:
Symphobia
EWQL Gold Pro
EWQL Choirs
EWQL RA
EWQL Stormdrum 2
Stylus RMX
Omnisphere
Heavyocity Evolve
A.I.R.
FM8
Custom Brass Staccs
Custom String Staccs
Sonar 8 - my sequencer of choice
Adobe Audition 3 for all of my mixing / mastering
Reverberate for my verb
And a slew of EQ, Compression, etc plug ins
My custom samples can be heard in this piece... they're meant to sound like Zimmer:
http://richdouglas.net/random/exp4/Expe ... ape_RD.mp3
I also do James Bond music in my spare time, my newest piece can be heard here (also played the guitar on this piece):
http://richdouglas.net/bond/007_to_NewYork_RD.mp3
All of my bond music can be heard / downloaded here for any fellow bond fans interested:

Also have been rescoring Goldeneye, which can be seen via youtube here:

I was quite serious.Austin wrote:I don't know if Trev was serious or not, but this is probably the most playable FPS on the system outside of your comfort zone (Wolfenstein 3D).Trev wrote:Cyberdillo. (Can't get much further from the comfort zone than w/this underated game. )
Btw rdmusic007, I enjoyed your samples! I'm a huge Bond fan, and listened to a number of the tracks you posted. Good stuff! Do you have anything from Licence to Kill by chance?

LOL I always liked those commercials. I like bond a good deal, I don't think I'd call myself a fan but I am going to buy all the BDs. I have the first three box sets so far and had all the laserdiscs.
