the search continues and more headaches.

Post by phatrat1982 » Thu Jul 07, 2011 12:49 am

Ok so in my quest to find a 3DO console I stumbled upon a pretty decent used video game store in the area. I have not had a chance to visit yet but my sister went in yesterday and while I was on the phone with her I had her ask if they had any 3DO consoles, the guy said never heard of it but we have a 32o for Sega, I had her ask if he meant 32x and he said no. They do have a crap load of Saturn games and a couple of consoles so I might just put 3DO on hold like always and get back into Saturn since emulating that beast is so much of a headache I have long since given up.

well if the stupid thing would have sold better during it's heyday I would not be in this mess thank you very much. I am sure that someday down the road I will stumble into a thrift store and find an old dusty cd player some guy forgot about long ago and find out it is the elusive 3DO console that I only read about in magazines and internet forums. I almost convinced myself I imagined the whole thing until finding this place.

It is possible it happened to me, only replace thrift store with flea market

They actually arnt that elusive if you look in more places than a thrift store, but i also wouldnt say they go for "next to nothing" on ebay. I find ebay prices abit high for 3do consoles.. There is almost always a couple of consoles on there tho at any given time, but you can also check out used videogame stores online.

I can understand if you dont want to pay shipping for a heavy console, but sometimes you have to.

well I do go to used video game stores, but it is always the same everyone asks me if I mean 32X and proceeds to tell me there is no such thing as 3DO. Yeah ebay, I hate ebay but I have looked and it seams whenever I do they are going for like $120+ and that is way more than I wanna spend on one right now.

I will keep looking because since coming here has brought back all those times really wanted one as a kid but had to settle for playing Sega. Don't get me wrong I love my Sega but I always wanted to get a 3DO instead and never did.

Your local video game shops are comprised of ignorant #$)*tards if they don't know what a 3DO is. Just go to eBay man, there are plenty of systems to go around at decent prices there.

eBay is the best option. £40 ($60) should get you something.

Look for bundles on ebay too. For just a few $ more, you can usually grab a system with 10 games or so.

It's odd that they'd know more about 32X ... I mean, I know it has the Sega name and all, but 3DO did sell more units.

yeah but one has a legacy and the other is one that more people had at the time but less people know about know. I don't know in my experiences I know of few people who don't atleast know what 32x is but I have only ever found maybe three people ever not online that heard of 3DO and I move a lo and have been all over the country. But to be fair most of the guys at these video game stores are usually in their early 20s and probably grew up on Sega bashing so they would be familiar with the name if nothing else.

What he said.

So far, the 3DO has missed the worst of the retro craze, but we're definitely seeing some price inflation on ebay. Cheap deals can still be found, you just have to think the opposite of all the collectors, reseller parasites, and noobs:

*They all think the FZ-1 is "classic" because that's what racketboy or something told them. They're not interested in the FZ-10.
*They want CIB games to look purdy on their shelf with all of their other collections.
*They don't want loose, scratched-but-playable discs and even if they did, they assume the auction for the bare console and hook-ups will be cheaper than the big lot (not necessary true).
*Finally, they're scared of the unknown. These people probably shop at Target and they want to feel comfortable. Most of them don't even have the patience to wait seven days for an old-school auction anymore. They'll prefer an over-priced BIN console with a nice description, multiple pictures, and a return policy over starting their precious collection with a random assortment of incomplete games that might have germs on them.

In short, wait for a FZ-10 auction with a bunch of random crap and one crumby picture. Set your alarm clock and place your maximum bid in the last ten seconds - best deal you can find.

3DO missed the worst of the retro craze? Where were you a year ago? You couldn't even buy games because everyone thought GEX was worth $60!
Plus the FZ-10 seems to be the one that all the retro-dorks seem to be clambering over, probably because it looks like a PS3. There do tend to be more FZ-1s on the market but that's what's normal.

Precisely. It's what puts me off going to other retro sites. The retro L33T trot out the same, crappy lines about 3DO regardless. FZ1=ugly and only needs Star Control 2. It's practically a meme for the huge swathes of masses that want to appear knowledgeable on Retro Gaming. Same for the Jag. I used to respond to 3DO questions on other forums about which games are best, versions, comparisons, and so, but there isn't any point. My, and I feel it's justified, expert opinion was drowned out by the Retro gaming Sages.

Over the past 13 years the price of 3DO stuff has wavered considerably. It follows the trends. We're on an incline now in the UK because interest in 360 and PS3 is waning. Summer also changes things. Two months before Christmas this forum will be dead, games will be cheap.
