From 3DO... where do you go?

Post by ILUV3DO » Sun Jul 29, 2012 6:01 am

So, inevitably it'll happen. Eventually, at some point you finish. You reach the goal. Collection complete. You could be like me, attempting to assemble a complete U.S. 3DO library. Or, maybe you're into the Japanese scene and are going for a complete set from that region. Maybe you have a predefined wish list of certified classics you are trying to accrue. Regardless, there will come a time when you slide that last case onto your shelf, check off that last box on the list. For some of you who have been collecting for awhile and are blessed with money (or have re appropriated it from other less important things like food and clothes) that moment has already come. Some of us are just drawing near. Still others are just embarking on their sacred 3DO pilgrimage. The question I pose is relevant to all. Some of us have already confronted it. The rest of us will be there in time. From 3DO, where do you go next? I lo r the 3DO system and when I finally earn my 3DO merit badge, I want the spirit of the system to carry on as much as possible. So which system accomplishes this the best? Which one feels the most like our beloved vision of the future? One of the reasons I believe the 3DO was special was that it forged new ground. It was true to itself. It did not try to be anything else. It fearlessly tried new things, sometimes at the expense of quality, sometimes at the expense of class, nevertheless it was an adventure. You never really knew what you were going to get and that made it fun. It wad unique in an era of videogames that existed prior to our current state of generic, watered down, focus tested, cookie cutter, derivative drivel. In that regard, which other system do you feel possessed that same pioneering spirit? Which system would you or have you moved onto after 3DO? As for myself, these are the systems I am contemplating, and I am having trouble making up my mind:

Phillips CD-i: To me, this one seems kind of like a brother to 3DO. Alot of fmv games. Some nice point and click adventures. A little bit of uncertainty as far as what it wanted to be. Some edutainment thrown in there just like 3DO. Games I would want - Burn Cycle, 7th Guest, Zelda games.

Sega Saturn: This one seems to hang at the cliffs edge of commercialism. Some nice sidescrollers and RPG's. A little too much PSX envy. Games I would want - All the jrpg's, Clockwork Knight, Nights.

TurboDuo - Simple fare on the Turbo cart side but some nice RPG love on the Turbo CD side. Obscurity of games feels a little like 3DO, which would make the collection feel unique and somewhat special. Games I would want - Ys, Cadash, Dragonslayer.

Amiga CD32: A good compliment of point and click and adventures. Some fresh indie spirit although games seem impossible to find. Games I would want - Inherit the earth, Beneath a steel sky, Simon the sorcerer.

Jaguar: Unique console design and some nice looking shooters. Games I would want - ....hmmm

So, which do think is the most intriguing prospect for a 3DO collector to move on to once his or her 3DO journey has come to an end?

i was collecting 3DO and Sega CD at the same time, and those 2 systems started my collecting frenzy (thanks to Funcoland). then when i joined ebay it was 3DO, Atari 7800, CD-i, TG-16, and NES plus many others

my goal for the 3DO was all the US released games, i had the goal accomplished for about 3 years then i sold a few games (1 being Dinopark tycoon). the Atari 7800 was easier to finish because there is only like 58 US released games and i had atleast 40 of them since the early 90's already. i finished that one first and it gave me the idea to try to get all the 3do games

the CD-i was the system i bought games for from videogame mag reviews of the 90's and boy was that fun. i collected about 47 games and 47 movies for the CD-i (Fun Fact: i found my first cd-i system in the garbage, still works)

the TG-16 was about getting the games back i had when i was a young man, in 1992 i sold my system with 50 games to a guy i knew. 5 yrs later i tracked him down and and bought the system back, but with 45 less games  his kid traded all but 5 games to funcoland for modern games

all the rest of the systems were buy games i thought i would like to play
the most i ever spent for a game was Dinopark Tycoon (boxed) $180
and since 2008 the only system or games ive bought was a GBAsp and some games

in the end you just have to find a system thats cheap to collect for right now or when your ready and it should be something your interested in.
for me all the Sega systems were at the top of my list and the playstation was at the bottom
Ex-3DO collector extraordinaire , but i still have my collection

IMO it's all about finding a system that appeals to you. I've collected most systems now apart from x68000.

Neogeo AES, Famicom twin, MSX Turbo R, PCEngine CRROM, SuperGrafx, Atari 5200, Amiga, C64, 8 bit atari, NES, ZX Spectrum.

But I've managed to whittle my collection down to just 3DO, JAP Megadrive, Spectrum and Atari ST. some machines have more appeal to me because of nostalgia, I no longer collect systems because they're rare mainly because the games for these systems tend to be crappy (MSX Turbo R & Supergrafx especially)

I think 3DO has enough treasures to keep me happy :)

Have you tried MegaCD? plenty of japanese treasures on this system :)

You clearly go to jaguar. Nice small library of games just as terrible as 3DO....

If you want a niche system with playable games, head over to Saturn.

I agree with sneth (except about the terrible games part), Jaguar or Saturn. I'd pick Jag, if only that you could chat about it here on the forum.

I own (or have owned) all the other systems you mentioned. I've found them more difficult to collect for, especially the CD32.

If you go CD-i, prepare yourself for the challenge of finding a fully functional console ... it isn't easy. :(

No matter what system I'm collecting for at present, I always come back to 3DO since it has so many of my favorites! :D And there are still games I want/need, even if they are rare.

Well from your list I would suggest either Jaguar as it's easy to complete a collection (compared to others) or TurboDuo as it's tons of fun. I have a very small collection of games from the Turbo/PC Engine/ family and I have to admit they are a lot of fun. However my game collecting has more to do with getting things I want as opposed to building a specific collection. Or more simply put, having a collection is a result of getting stuff I want to play with.

Someone said, either on here or the AtariAge forums that the 3DO and Jaguar compliment each other perfectly. Both out around the same time, both attempted to create the next generation but ended up stuck between the 16-bit and 32-bit gens. There are similar games on each system too.

Some great games for the Jaguar, imo are Doom, Wolfenstein, I-War, Iron Soldier and Cybermorph.

It's true. Whatever the Jag didn't get in terms of a genre, the 3DO did. And vice-verse.

All the JRPGs? That'll take you quite a while!

For what it's worth, I came to 3DO collecting because I saw it as a logical follow-up to Saturn collecting. A lot of 3DO developers went on to develop for the Saturn: Warp, Crystal Dynamics, Micro Cabin, Digital Pictures, etc. Also, while CD-i clearly has a higher percentage of them, I think the Saturn has more FMV games than the CD-i; some of the good ones include Lunacy (a.k.a. Torico), Enemy Zero, and the Girls in Motion series.

Am I an oddball for thinking after (IF) I ever get tired of collecting 3DO stuff that Sega CD was the next step? I always thought of Sega CD and CD-I the cousins of 3DO.

Yeah, i sort of agree with that.

Sega 32x, Jaguar is an obvious choice.

PS1, Playstation PS-X, whatever, as a good choice too. It has some astonishingly good games and a lot of interesting games that got lost in all the noise.

- Kouldeka (Under rated)
- Ace Combat 3 (much better than 1 and 2, get the Japanese version, you won't understand any of the acting, but you can just soak up the 1990s anime)
- Colony Wars. Red Sun.
- Pacman World (yes)
- Legacy of Kain

then there is like 200 obvious choices. FF VII, MGS, RR, RRT4, Tekken 2, and so on, and on, and on...

It gets a lot of hate, but the PS1 is a cracking games machine.

As mentioned, the Jag complements the 3DO well. It's also got a relatively small library in comparison, so it shouldn't be difficult or too terribly time consuming to track down the titles that might interest you. Many games can still be found factory sealed for reasonable prices as well. It has a wide enough variety of games to stay interesting, despite the small library.

Here are my thoughts on some other systems from the same time period:

CD-i: It's an interesting platform from a historical perspective, but I find the only thing it excels at are point 'n click and FMV games. For the most part with a few exceptions, anything outside of point 'n clicks are lackluster thanks to either controller delay/lag, poor framerates, or just a total lack of polish.

32X: I tend to lump this with the Jaguar. It's a nice little add-on with some quality titles. Generally the Sega-developed/published titles is "where it's at" with this system.

Sega CD: Good add-on with a nice variety of games. It's dead in the 16-bit era of gaming though, so asides from FMV, don't expect anything very "3DO-like".

Turbo DUO: Basically my same sentiments as the Sega CD, with a much greater variety of action games and shooters. Plus, you have the HuCard/TurboChip capabilities as well, meaning you can tap in to the stock PC engine or Turbo Grafx library, which is excellent for arcade-style gaming.

Saturn: This would be my first pick. Sure, it's the most "commercial" and widely accepted of the rest I listed, but why let that stop you? You are missing out on some absolute classics that you can't get anywhere else, from RPGs, to platformers, to the obligatory (excellent) Sega arcade conversions. The system is also cheaper than any of the others I listed above.

2D version didn't. 3D version was aces too. The 3D version was very different to the first one.

I disagree. Virtual Boy should be next. It has two good games. And that's it. Plus, who wants to play a system that DOESN'T give them a headache?

Did people really get headaches w/the VB? I kinda always assumed it was one of the urban legends of gaming. I don't seem to ever remember getting a headache when playing mine, but maybe I'm fortunate.

VB's are annoying to try & fix when the lenses detach. :(

Eye strain can cause a headache. Most people who had this problem simply did not adjust the screens for their eyes and after too long it hurt. Nintendo really didn't stress calibration enough as they pretty much only mention it in the manual; and who reads those? Not to mention people would play on the in-store display and there was not a thing that mentioned either one of the eye adjustments (I remember seeing little kids playing with the knob and slider while not even looking in the eye ports) so people would simply have light eye strain from just a few minutes of game play. The rumors that it could damage your eyes was BS. I even saw an episode of Pawn Stars where Corey said it was bad for your eyes, but it seems that no one on that show knows sh*t about Nintendo anyway.

I always thought it was in the same league as reading in poor light. If the eye can't see, it can't see, and that's that. And ergo, it's impossible to damage the eye that way. Aside from looking at high power lasers and the sun, and one would assume Nintendo had that covered, it would be harmless.

When it comes to the "transitional" 32-bit systems, I started with the 32X, for which I have about 2/3 of the released games. I picked up a 3DO toward the end of 2010 IIRC, and am up to around 40 games.

I don't plan or expect to ever have a complete 3DO collection (domestic or pan-galactic), but if I were to move into a new system from that era, the logical choice would be Saturn or Jaguar. (I already have modest PlayStation and N64 collections, BTW.)

If money were no object I'd probably go for the Jaguar first, but it's a prohibitively expensive system to collect for, and the lack of an EverDrive-style flashcart is a buzzkill. But really I'd rather play through more of the 32X and 3DO library first. So far, I've beaten 4 games on each system, which in the case of the 32X is already 10% of the system's library!

Though the point where the 3DO is "finished" is never gonna
come (decent homebrew which will keep it floating will hopefully
come at some point ;-) ), I would go with a Fujitsu FM Towns Marty.
Especially the following games would be on my list:

- Awesome
- Bubble Bobble
- Dungeon Master
- Indiana Jones and the last crusade
- Monkey Island 1
- Monkey Island 2
- Operation Wolf
- R-Type
- Shadow of the beast 1
- Shadow of the beast 2
- Splatterhouse
- Tiger Heli
- Viewpoint
- Wing Commander 2
- Zak McKracken

I have a VB. It doesn't really bother me. But most of the games are terrible. Try a Tiger Game.com. Pros: none. Cons: everything. I found one in a trailer that I was clearing off a piece of property deep in the woods of Tennessee. It still worked, was in the original box, and had two or three games with it. I thought I had some long lost treasure til I looked at the price on egay, and found that one barter a game.com for a day old hotdog at 7-11.
The point is, this thing is awful. So collect one, afterall, misery loves company.

Saturn is a good choice. I bought one just because I was curious about it and it's become an enjoyable system. I even find myself still buying things for it recently. It turned out to be just what a game system is supposed to be... fun.

Yeah, I've wanted one for a while, and I remember enjoying sessions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtual On on a friend's system in the late 1990s. Until recently I forced myself to think of it as a "someday" item...

...but then yesterday, my fiancée came home from yard sale-ing with an insane amount of stuff (seven boxes worth!) that she picked up for a ridiculously low price. Among the many treasures included were 17 mostly-CIB Saturn games (including Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Shining Wisdom!) and two controllers. No system, but I guess it's a sign? :D

Thanks! We're still sorting through it, but it's an absolutely insane haul, especially given the price she paid (which was so low that I'm too embarrassed to post it). Most of the popular SNES titles, lots of hard-to-find PlayStation games including Mega Man Legends 2 and Tron Bonne, quality N64 and Genesis games, and lots of hardware including dozens of controllers, multitaps, Genesis and PlayStation mice...it's nuts.
