I tried to follow this link, but because the forum changes the term e b a y to evilbay, I inadvertently wound up on evilbay.com - a different website which tried to install a rootkit on my computer.

Don't click the link.

I did not know that. Sorry for that. : (

It was an auction where the guy was trying to sell a purported copy of NFS M2. It was recorded on a modern TDK CDR, nothing semilar to the alpha or beta CDRs that developers used to use and run on development workstations.

The price was U$8000

Fixed. Anyone think it's legit?

The price is criminal, the disc looks dodgy. but...

The listing doesn't inspire much confidence ...

The seller does have plenty of positive feedback... but... regardless of whether or not it's legit, I don't understand how he can make the claim "One of a kind". Even assuming this is the actual Beta, the disc it's on is just a common TDK blank CD with the title written on it in marker. Surely the seller could easily make 100 copies just like it and sell them one at a time through various websites? Am I missing something?

I came to the same conclusion. Over 4000+ feedback though.

Although he isn't selling much right now. Maybe he's gone bad? WHo knows

Found an article from 1999 announcing those exact CD-Rs coming out. Also found a thread talking about buying them on sale at Circuit City (RIP) from 2001. So that gives you a timeframe on these discs. Earliest it could've been burned is late '99/early 2000. Which means it was obviously not original from that time period, but likely copied from an original. Still, doesn't mean the data on it isn't the real deal. Could also be the "only one known" or whatever in recent years. Guess it depends how crazy a collector you are.

There's a guy selling Plumbers Don't Wear Ties for 129.99 on Ebay. Maybe there should be an "Ebay WTF man" sticky thread.
