3DO Collecting questions

Post by Orrimarrko » Fri Feb 29, 2008 8:51 am

Hey all,

Not new to owning or playing the 3DO, this is actually the fifth time I've owned one (4 FZ-1 consoles, 1 FZ-10 (I think that's the model #)).

However, I've never considered collecting for the system until now.

I basically have two or three questions, and any knowledgeable help is greatly appreciated.

1. I've used the search feature to find a "complete" list of available titles sold in the US (not that I'm not interested in other regions, but I have to start somewhere).

The couple of threads that I've found with "complete US lists" seem to have some differences.

I'm wondering, is there at least a consensus as to what constitutes a "complete" US collection?

2. Do all 3DO games from all countries work on the US FZ-1 system?

3. Is there a list/source that identifies what makes a game complete? In addition to being a completist, I am extremely particular about condition.

I only collect mint/near mint CIB games for the other systems I collect for (NES, Atari 2600/5200).

So, I'm wondering, what games came in the "long box" format, vs what didn't come in a long box? What came without manuals/jewel case inserts? What games came with extras?

Again, I appreciate any information that can aid me here.

It would be outstanding if there was a site which had a picture of each "complete" game. That way, you could tell if you're missing something or not.

Thanks everyone!

Orri~

for me its anything that you could buy off the shelf at a store, and even mail in offers (like the mental messages for tom kite), some people wont consider the repackaged games like the Action pak and the Maniac pack as a new game since its just games that were already released, for completeness i think they must be in your collection

2. Do all 3DO games from all countries work on the US FZ-1 system?
for the most part yes, there are some from japan with will only work on the sanyo system (someone else can fill what the difference is because i forgot)

not that i know of but you could start a new thread and ask, like Zhadnost came with a controller
i have all the US games (except dino park now) but many of them are still sealed so i couldnt tell you whats inside them, i think im missing a book from cowboy casino and the hint book from kiling time, the adult game mind teazzer came in long box and jewel case only forms in the US

I agree with your point in #1 above. The action pak should be counted (for example), in my opinion.

Cool about #2 - that's very useful to know that there aren't too many compatibility issues.

Bummer about #3 - I was certain that this may have already been covered. No biggie.

However, I do have an important question though:

What US games were NOT released in longboxes? I would think that would be an easier list than what games did come with a longbox.

If anyone can help with that question, that would be great!

Thanks,
Steve

off the top of my head i can think of these

- all the adult 3do titles were jewel case only (but with a cardboard sleeve, the only exception is the title i mentioned above it doesnt have a cardboard sleeve, as far as i know the boxed version doesnt have it)
you can see the pic of one here (the bottom part of the pic), they look the same as the front and back cover of the jewel case
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/ ... ntback.jpg
- the virtual vivid sampler came in a plain jewel case with the CD only

- the 3 volumes of Woody Woodpecker, jewel case
- the mail in Mental Messages for Tom Kite came in a cardboard holder

- the original Panasonic Real Sampler and the Sample This sampler came in a jewel case, the rest came in a cardboard sleeve
- killing time (the bug fixed version) came in a plain jewel case with the CD only, the CD is black in color with red lettering (the original i think is red in color with black lettering)

apart from those i think all the rest came with the long box
the game guru comes in a smaller square box

Okay - what prompted this question was this thread:

http://cdinteractive.co.uk/3do/forum/vi ... .php?t=639

About half-way down the original post, was this statement and a photo:

Then the rest of the USA stuff, the NFR and those that never came with the longbox in the first place. In addition there are the PAL games I've got, only just started on those, so fairly poor show at the moment. Then there are the Canadian ones (those in the long box), that's all that were ever released there as far as I can tell. Then a few other bits and pieces.

So, what I was trying to figure out, was what "those that never came with the longbox in the first place" meant. I'm certain there are more titles there than just the adult games and a few samplers.

Also, what is NFR?

Finally, in that same post, you can see there are a couple of what seem to be "doubles" in the longbox photos. Are they different?

These are the ones that I'm asking about:

Brain Dead 13 (is one the 1.1, and how can you tell from the box?)
Road Rash (is one with the music cd, and the other not?)
Total Eclipse (not sure here)

Thanks again!

Steve

NFR i think is Not For Resale
an example would be the pack in Gex for the FZ10 system only came with the jewel case plus it was released in the long box

im not sure about the canadian items, maybe they have french on the boxes somewhere or the boxes are alittle different to the ones released in the US

ahh ok im not sure how to tell the difference between the brain dead 13 game or total eclipse, i really dont deal with box variations or imports really just the US versions and adult japan games, the guy that started that post does

the road rash game with the music cd will have a sticker on the front saying the music cd is included and will have a 2nd area for the CD, the other wont

and i just looked at my collection and the ones i mentioned earlier are the only ones that come without the long boxes, i didnt count the games that were included as pack in games for the systems because they didnt come with long boxes and the packins seem to vary alittle bit
i have no idea how he has his stuff catagorized, but the pic you are talking about looks cluttered with many items that were released in long boxes

just check back from time to time other people will post to help, sometimes this forum can be dead for awhile

It's true ... some are bilingual. I think there are only a 1/2 dozen or so that are like this though. Guardian War & Wailee Golf are 2 that spring to mind.

Just to confirm what's been said here already really, but the Brain Dead 1.1 has a sticker on the front to say that's the case.

Road Rash is with and without the music disc, the one with the disc has what looks like a yellow sticker on the front, but it is printed on the box.

The Total Eclipse boxes are because there was a "Not For Resale" version of this released in the long box (the only one as far as I know), it has this printed on the front of the box.

The 6 Canadian games have the code FZ-SC (you can just about make it out on the picture) as opposed to FZ-SM for US, and most have billengual covers.

The rest of the US stuff without long boxes that Lemmi hasn't already mentioned are Not For Resale stuff. Usually ones that came with the machines originally.
