Best 3DO movie-game adaptation

Post by Trev » Mon Jun 09, 2008 6:28 pm

It should have been Jurassic Park Interactive, but the finished game did not seem to spend enough time in the cooker sadly. I still like parts of it, but it is in no way the best.

I voted for Demolition Man. Follows the movie very closely, and has cool original footage of it's two lead stars. Good gameplay variety w/shooting (both gallery & Doom style) fighting, & driving sequences. Graphics & sounds are top notch, and it even makes use of the ALG lightgun! Has some fun secrets too.

I realize Rebel Assault may not be a movie-game tie-in in the strictest sense of the word, but since it has so much footage from the original Star Wars & follows the plot more or less I thought it should be included. Would have been nice if the 3DO version would have been enhanced over the pc one though.

Casper. However, I should point out I have never seen the film Casper. But I do like the game. Actually, I did see it. It was just after I started working and I took this girl to see. We started working at the same place on the same day. But she was dirty and I was drunk. So I remember nothing. Of the film.

Yeah JP should have had more time to finish, we expected so much and got crap... my box is practically mint only because I played it two or three times and then put it away forever. I also voted Demolition Man, it was a great game and went along with the film well.

I wish I could say waterworld but we'll never know - so I go with Casper which was the last 3DO game I bought in the nineties and like the movie much more adult than expected

Who knows, maybe we will some day. The game will probably surface at some point (even if it is not on the 3DO sadly :( )

Thought I'd give this very old thread a bump so some of the newer memebers can vote in the poll and share some thoughts. Plus we were chatting about Demo Man in another thread recently, so cast a vote. :)

Of course it's Demolition Man! Anyone who disagrees is simply wrong.

Demolition Man for sure. However, I like all of the games listed for different reasons. Rebel Assault was cool though. It might not have been enhanced over the PC version, it is still nicer than the Sega CD version.

Yeah, it had an extra level that was missing in the Sega cd port. I think the Mac version of Rebel Assault might be the best.

Slightly off topic ... any idea how far along Demo Man was for the Jag cd? I know it was advertised, and I figure it would be just a straight port ...

It would have been cool if the 3DO version of Jurassic Park was a conversion of the Sega CD game. That one was respectable at the very least, with its Myst/7th Guest-like gameplay and decent CG backgrounds. It would have looked great on the 3DO. At lot better than that cheesy package we got anyway, haha. Then again, the Sega CD one might have been done by SEGA, but I digress..

As for the poll, I voted in it even though I haven't played all of the games. I have been reading constantly lately about Casper, and just by what I see it is probably the most polished game of the choices available, so I picked that. Jurassic Park is ridiculously goofy, Demo Man feels rough in areas, and Rebel Assault, while I have only played it on the Sega CD, seems like an interesting game, but not good enough to actually hold my interest.

Uh oh, the suggestion of polls is gaining traction. Pretty soon we'll all be slaves to casting votes on monthly inane character battles that always end with the most popular characters. By the way, on other sites it seemingly was always Sephiroth or Mario. For 3DO... I'd have to guess Gex. Unless Street Fighter guys showed up, then I'd guess Ryu. I'm going to save time now and put a stamp on my permanent character battle vote: Carnby from Alone in the Dark (1).

Anyway, I pretty ignorantly voted Casper. Looks like I had the same reasoning as Austin. I've merely seen the game and read reviews on it like 3DOKid's review. The game did look "polished".

The only one listed that I own is Demolition Man. I didn't like the game, though. I would have appreciated it if it were more of a easy-breezy slumber party game like Daedalus Encounter. I felt it was too hard for this though. A lot of times I remember getting past areas by choreography of knowing what to do (like shooting out the light fixture to trigger a cutscene rather than shooting the guy you're actually trying to kill!)

While I agree w/you about the Sega cd version of JP (simply because I prefer that style/genre of gameplay) I don't know if I'd call 3DO JP cheesy ... If I was gonna take a shot at it, it'd be more like half baked or something. I'm slightly biased since it was one of my first 3DO games, but it did have merit ...

It actually kinda remind me of Demo Man in that both games emply different game styles and wrap them together w/movie footage. Unlike Demo Man though, JP doesn't have a clear winner. There is no top notch fps for instance (although the JP first person scenes are good in their own way, and plenty intense) Demo Man also had the cool light gun scenes ... JP does have a shooting section, but it is meh by comparison. I guess the biggest difference is that w/Demo Man I feel like I am actually playing the movie, whereas with JP I feel like I am playing a collection of mini games based on the movie.

JP was in many ways a dissapointment ... It feels unfinished and as a result feels like a waste of the movie licence. Overall though, I think the total package of the game is okay.

The FMV was shot and there was a little bit of level work done on it, but the game wasn't even in Alpha form when it was canned.

I didn't submit a vote cause I've only played JP. So I really don't have an opinion on this one.
