GameParc GP2x
I've had one these GP2x Gameparc consoles for a few months, and really, GameParc should write a book on how to clinch failure from the open mouth of certain victory.
Yes! it's cheap. Yes it falls apart because it's cheaply made!
Yes it doesn't come with a battery. Yes, there is no charger.
Yes it has a touch screen. Yes, the touch screen is completely useless.
Yes it sounds aweful. It does "tinny" like no other device I've ever put head phones in.
Yes it's open source. Yes, it's not backwards compaitible.
And so it goes on.
Yes! it doesn't have Wifi.
Yes! It doesn't have blue-tooth.
A nice idea.
Say what you want about the PSP/DS, despite their floors, their closed nature and their cost, they some how ARE better than the cheaper opensource option...
3DOKid.
The first person to bash the PSP, my favourite current generation console, gets an instant life ban*. 'Cos I'm fair like that.

Never even heard of this system before, but after doing a search I can see why. From the land that brought us the rarest of the rare 3DO games comes a system w/less titles than the Nuon.
I picked up a psp a few months ago and am having fun w/it. I love watching movies on it too for long road trips! The first person to bash the PSP, my favourite current generation console, gets an instant life ban*. 'Cos I'm fair like that.

I've been bashing the PSP since it's release and have been praising the GP2X since the 2nd model came out. Why would I want to play some piece of crap SONY handheld whose library is almost completely made up of halfassed PS2 ports?
I don't have the new touch screen model. It has more ram and different sound outputs so when it first came out, almost all the emulators had to be re-written.
When I bought the 2nd model, it came with 4 batteries. I owned a AA charger. Battery life lasts me 5 hours. And I bought an AC adapter for when I use it at home.
The sound output is fine, but it's best to use the headphone jack which sounds great to me.
When I bought it, the PSP did not have TV out and the GP2X did. I was able to watch movies WITHOUT HAVING TO RECONVERT THEM on my TV as well as playing numerous emulators.
The GP2X cradle is a nifty device, although I don't own one. Connect your GP2X to an AC outlet, connect it to the TV, connect some USB controllers, and you and your buddies can play MAME without have to squish next to each other on one keyboard.
When I bought the GP2X, all emulators were equal to those on the PSP except the SNES, Neo Geo, and the GBA which were surprisingly superior. The GP2X also has near perfect Sega CD emulation which I don't even believe there's an emulator for the PSP.
The sole reason why I bought one about a year back was because I had 2 hour breaks between my college classes. So I'd go to my college library and watch some movies or play some King of Fighters. I haven't had any breaks semesters afterwards so I've lost interest in the device except for watching films via TV out.

Okay. You went there. You had too? Right? Okay. Fine. Good for you. Okay let's go. C'mon.
The PSP screen is better.
First and foremost:
With the hacked firmware you can play all the old Playstation titles in wide screen. That's the way god intended. Siphon Filter, Wipeout 2097, Tekken 2 and 3, Tomb Raider, Rage Racer, Nightmare Creatures, Galaxian 3, Tunnel B1 - all in wide screen! In the palm of your hand! YOUR HAND! This is primarily why i loved the PSP. Old PS1 games for boring train/plane/long exercise sessions.
Then movie playback: I'll admit the PSP is a pain in the backside to figure out what format it needs. But once you master All2Avi or Renpad the world is your oyster. I watched the entire series of Battlestar Galactica on my PSP on the train to London and back over a couple of months. I watched 4 or 5 movies on the long plane-ride to Dallas, if it wasn't for my PSP - I'd be insane. Honestly - I would. You don't need to convert the format back to anything if you have a PS3...
The utility in the Gp2x for playing back music is all sorts of irritating too. The PSP isn't great (Playlists?) but Sony know how to make a Walkman. And we'll leave it at that.
The build quality: Everyone bemoans the PSP Dpad but it takes the GP2x one to really appreciate what Sony did.
PSP native games? It panders to the Sony fanboy but God of War, Killzone PSP is better than Killzone PS2 (not hard) Ridge Racer(s) is brilliant, Wipeout Pure, Final Fantasy Advent Children, Everybody's Golf (thing), Lummies, the MGS card games sound about as much fun as cholesterol but they are actually pretty good. R-Type Command, Monster adventure... there are a few none-ps2 games that are actually good.
The Neogeo emu is OK for all the early Neogeo stuff. The Mame emulator (mame4all) is about the same as the Gp2x version.
Believe me, I wanted to love the Gp2x, it had Linux on it. LINUX! I really wanted t love it, but just when you think the Gp2x is going to be aces - it balls it all up.
If my GP2x had the Sony Screen, the Sony Sound quality and the Sony build quality, I'd chuck my PSP in the bin now. However, the Gp2x has been built as a cost-saving, profit maximising exercise.
Now, the PSP costs about the same (batteries and charger taken into account) has, with hacked firmware, similar functionality, but better build quality and it's own game titles... surely common sense dictates the PSP is better? no?

ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh REALLY?
I have PSP, a GP2x and a DS (chunky version)
PSP > GP2x > DS.
I admit, Nintendogs and Brain training were fun. Albeit breifly but that's it. Other than that, the DS has gathered dust for 18 months.
I like my PSP 'cos it can do stuff: Movies, games, music, old games, web browse, you can hack the firmware, it's fun. Making a Pandora battery is actually fun. There - I've said it. I'm a geek. What can you do?
I'm OK with the Gp2x 'cos it's kind of interesting despite my reservations.
My DS plays girls games.
That-settles-that.

I have Tomb Raider and Tunnel B1 on the Saturn. I own Syphon Filter for the PS1. Nightmare Creatures is a terrible game. With the hacked firmware you can play all the old Playstation titles in wide screen. That's the way god intended. Regardless, I'm not a big fan of the PS1 and I can just as easily burn the disc and play it on my PS2 using Gameshark Lite.
I don't have a dpad. I have an analog stick so I can't comment on that. The build quality: Everyone bemoans the PSP Dpad but it takes the GP2x one to really appreciate what Sony did.
I was never interested in any PSP games when they first came out and I'm still not interested in any of them today.PSP native games? Ghosting, motion blur, etc. No thanks. The PSP screen is better.
I don't understand why you got the GP2X. When I bought mine, I knew that the functionality of it is similar to that of a hacked PSP but I didn't want a PSP.Now, the PSP costs about the same (batteries and charger taken into account) has, with hacked firmware, similar functionality, but better build quality and it's own game titles... surely common sense dictates the PSP is better? no?
I wanted to watch AVI DVDrips on my TV and play some arcade games while on my breaks at college. I got what I wanted. I got an excellent handheld that has constant updates everyday and a wonderful community.
BTW, when emulating old games does the PSP stretch them to fit the disgusting widescreen?
