I've been playing Wing Commander 3 for the past 2 1/2 hours

Post by UnholyTancred » Mon Jun 09, 2008 4:22 am

I got a complete copy around 2 weeks ago but I didn't check it out because I wanted to finish Super Wing Commander first. I know that WC3 is better than SWC in pretty much every aspect, and I had the feeling if I started playing WC3 I wouldn't come back to SWC.

Well things got too hard in SWC and even though I can, I don't feel like failing every other mission so I gave WC3 a go.

All I can say is WOW!

It's amazing. It really is. The FMV footage is in fantastic quality with only minor pixellation. The acting is good, the dialogue is good, the graphics are good, everything is good! Mark Hamill is even chubby and has facial hair.

The game has completely sucked me in. I would be still playing it right now but I got stuck on a mission so I'm taking a coffee break.

good luck with WC3 and dont get stuck in space with no one to pick you up

yup that happened to me many times on one mission, nothing like waiting 30min and still no pickup lol

great game and it sucked me in also alot of little things make it so cool
also seeing a classic porn star in a videogame is kinda neat also

Quite a # of cheats to be found in both SWC & WCIII. 'Finger of death' ... yeah! :D

I don't like cheating. Last time I ever cheated in video games was when I was a kid playing the original DOOM :P

Argh, I screwed up. The mission I kept dying on was the one where you have to prevent the bioweapons from reaching Laconda 4. On my billionth attempt, I was near death and decided to eject for shits and giggles. Little did I know, the 3DO automatically saves your game file after you finish a mention as long as you survive it.

Haha, so now I'm on disc 2.

The start, when the Kilrathi are killing Blairs girlfriend. That is amazing. That's the bit with the cavern, with spaceship spinng round? Awesome.

The 3D effects are quite something too. There is nothing quite like shooting something, and the blue glowing shield effect.

I remember some mission where you have to attack some asteriod base, and that was awesome too.

I also remember trying to be as far from the enemy carriers as possible, and finishing them off, just so I could watch them break up.

Yeah Wing 3 was as good as it gets - Wing IV was a shocker and what the hell was Chris Roberts thinking with the movie.I mean most video game tie ins are terrible but with the original producer and writer well......producing and writing you would have thought it would be decent.I kept expecting scooby doo to jump out and ask Blair for some scooby snacks and what was he doing with Shaggy on the flight deck.

Keep with it guys - it took me nearly 3 days to complete and although the ending was a blatant rip off of a certain movie it still is rewarding to watch.

It hurst me to watch it.

Would have been better just to edit all the game cinemas together.

I'll never forgive Jonathon Frakes (Riker - Star Trek) for Thunderbirds either. Glad Universal took the Trek franchise from Ron Moore and company too JJ abrams should do a decent job.

I didn't mind the Wing Commander Movie. Technically it never made it to the UK I believe. But I hada copy on VHS from the U.S. and more recently DVD.

Also - there is a rumour that there is still a 3DO version of Wing Commander IV in the Electronic Arts library. I've got the PC version and the PSX version, and they both strike me as being ported from another system. There is something very wrong with PSX version, but if it IS (and I'm not saying it is) a port of a unreleased 3DO version -- then that would make sense.

If we were really, really, really nice to EA, how would we go about getting that 3DO version WCIV out of them do you think?

Somebody somewhere must have a relative/friend/contact of some kind that could at a minimum verify this. If it is true, then we could all resort to begging (I mean e-mailing etc...)

Well, you got Trip Hawkins to respond to you so clearly you must write an effective letter. Maybe do something similar? I'd sign it.

In fact you could make it a requirement for all members ... sign the game petiton or get the boot. :P (Kidding .... sorta)

HOLY CRAP! I'VE BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME ALL NIGHT AND ALL DAY! UP TO DISC 4 ALREADY!

Few games have really pulled me in so fast and only let go at the end. Shadowrun, Fallout 2, Yakuza, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and a few others. This game is just AWESOME!

Yes, it is. The best incarnation of this game, ever. The PC WC3 seems to be a stripped down version. The PSX WC3 doesn't deserve even a mention.

Wing 4 on PC is awesome too. The movie sets are real, not CGs, but the PSX version is a real mutilated shame. I can't imagine how good could it be the 3DO version!

P.S. I have them all.

It'll be difficult. Normally, to use a Battlefield Earth term, you need leverage.

With Trip I was a gushing fanboy crammed with admiration. Easy.

With EA we need to convince them it's not only a good idea, but also a benefit to Electronic Arts in some way.

Then you've got to word it so the reader feels compelled to act.

So, we need some options.

1) Is it likely EA will release Wing Commander IV for the 3DO for free?

2) Could they release it via another EA owned brand?

3) Could they slip it out of the back door in a brown paper bag. (You never saw it here!)

4) What possible benefit could the release of WCIV be to EA?

5) What possible benefit could the release of WCIV be to the reciever of our letter. (There could be a retro-branch of EA after some cheap publicity, we could leverage a magazine to help us - costs of releasing WCIV would be covered by the public-relations budget!)

Any thoughts...

Maybe # 5. Don't you contribute to some game magazines? Maybe you can swing the idea by some of your fellow journalists?

Of course #3. would be the easiest ...

Me? Journalist? Contribute to magazines? You have the wrong guy. You've seen the blog right?

Devin does! Let's ask Devin.

Between me and you, I think Retro Gamer hate me. I'm quite loud. Very oppionated. Gobby. (Does that make sense in the US?) and life panned out nice for me, and when I get offended, I use that to rub it in to the Retro-gaming Nazis that run that show, and forum. Which makes me look like an idiot (more like a tw*t) but... (Not necessarily the RG staff but the fascists that run the online forum, who I simply cannot abide)

Having said that, I do believe, that they, Retro Gamer, pander to Sega/Nintendo. I don't want to start, but I'm British. I'm confident we played Atari and Commodore more than Sega and Nintendo. But you'd never guess. To make it worse Retro Gamer seem to hate Sony (Sony games get no coverage at all beyond Iko, SotC and Castlevania which was rubbish in my opinion and MGS.) which for fan-boys is great, for a magazine? In my honest opinion it's Sh*t. You either spend your time playing-with-yourself to yet another merry-go-round of isn't Sega/Nintendo aces or you branch out into something genuinely interesting.

The stuff that is contributed to Retro Gamer (by the Nazi powers) have no clue of Atari, Commodore (beyond the c64), Sony or 3DO. The magazine is almost entirely written by freelance writers and they are semi-educated (like me I guess) n00bs who picked up gaming 1996. (Unlike me)

So no. No I don't. [/rant off]

There was a guy, John Sczzpaniac (wrong spelling) who was actually pretty good, and thought outside the box, he made the magazine interesting, in fact his article on Sega in Brazil and obscure collecting was brilliant but the publisher is hopeless apparently and he left.

and now...!? I haven't bothered with the magazine or forum in months.

I'm an Eclectic Gamer, Retro Gaming is too mainstream for the likes of me... pfft.

Or to put it another way, I enjoyed Reika virtual puppet more than GTA IV. That sums things up nicely.

Couldn't have put it better. 8)

Well in that case, I hope Devin has some tricks to pull out of his sleeve.

It's easy enough. I'll have a look at the EA website and then call them to track someone down.
