Questions from a 3DO Newbie

Hi everyone! I primarily hang out on the Atari sites such as Jaguar Sector II and AtariAge, cuz I'm, y'know, an Atari dude. Nothing against the 3DO at all... in fact, if I had room, I'd have one.

Okay, the point: My brother has a 3DO with around 45 games. Since Christmas is coming up, I thought I'd add to his collection by picking up a few titles he is lacking.

Now, this isn't one of those "What games are best" topics...I'd like to think I'm better than that.

Questions are:

1) Is it 3DO or 3D0? (Sorry, but I really don't know... I am a newbie, remember? )

2) Are there any territorial lockouts? Meaning, can I buy him a Japanese game for his American player? (From what I've read here, it sounds like there is not a territorial issue, but I'd like to be sure before I buy him an overseas game.)

3) Is there a homebrew scene, like the Jaguar and Lynx has? Or at the least, are there any unreleased games that have been discovered and released?

4) Did all games come in the "long box" or were some released in DVD or CD cases? I see so very few on eBay with the long box, and that's all my brother has, so I'd rather keep buying them that way.

5) Are there good retailers out there, or am I best served simply using eBay? (And if I use eBay, has anyone had good experiences from certain sellers?)

6) and finally, is there a website that has a simple, quick review system for the games? I see the reviews here, and while they seem very thorough, I kinda want to see a simple 1-10 scale or something.

I tried to do my own research, but I didn't find much.

Any help you feel like giving me would be cool.

there are only a handful of japanese games that wont work on any other 3do that the Sanyo 3DO (japanese system)

simple answer - nope

the US games mostly came in long boxes and the UK and japanese games came in jewel cases

5) Are there good retailers out there, or am I best served simply using eBay? (And if I use eBay, has anyone had good experiences from certain sellers?)

gooddealgames.com has some games and ive never had a problem with those guys in the past, and they even took my money orders as payment

No, almost every game will work on any system. There are a few Japanese games that will only work on a jap console (not just Sanyo's) due to needing special fonts not found in other systems. Basically if you aren't sure just ask one of us, there was a list going on here at one point. Oh and so far 2 PAL games won't work on NTSC, they are Way of the Warrior & Wolfenstein

Yes and yes. However the homebrew scene is VERY small. And it's mostly composed of people trying to make a good version of the "encryption". So far there are five unreleased games that have been "encrypted" and released as well as one homebrew disc.

Many US games came in the long boxes but toward the end of the commercial life of the 3DO more and more titles simply got jewel cases. In Japan almost all were jewel cases, there were no official releases that came in DVD cases.

There is but they wouldn't know a good game from a garbage can.

Thanks everyone for the prompt and helpful replies! I knew 3DO people would be cool!

I think I'll have a look around the Interweb for those "high profile" games I know he doesn't have, and if I can find a few in uncrushed long boxes with instructions, I'll grab 'em. (When I say high profile, I mean the names that when I read them, I go, "Oh hey, I've heard of that!" Games like Alone in the Dark, Night Trap, D, Battle Chess, Demolition Man, Gex... maybe one of the "Adult" titles... his wife might offer objection, but eh!)

Say, I found a game list and copied it, but is there possibly a list of the games that came out in long box form?

Man, the 3DO sure had a lot of titles! I think even by the most generous estimates, the Jaguar has maybe 105 titles at most. If Im counting correctly, the 3DO has at least 175 US releases... and some of your collections are topping 325 titles! Fantastic, but wow, it must make collecting a long-term project, and expensive, too.

Goat Store seems to be a good choice for 3DO. I like their format, and I think I've bought from them before.

I just read the review for Battle Chess, and it mentioned the 3DO Maniac Pack. Upon research, I see that the Maniac Pack includes Way of the Warrior, Alone in the Dark, Battle Chess, and Out of This World. Are they complete versions of these games?

yes they are complete versions, if you see loose versions of those games on ebay you can tell which ones came out of the maniac pack as they will be on a silver CD with a color stripe down the middle of the CD
(yellow - out of this world, red - WotW , black - alone in the dark, blue - battle chess)


and you mentioned the Adult titles, just stay away from the Vivid titles, they are horrible and not really adult (if you ask me)
they show boobs and thats about it, i would just get him the actual porn movie and it might be the same price or less

Y'know, I've spent the past several hours reading and watching reviews, and I gotta tell ya, I'm starting to feel a strong urge to go buy me a 3DO!

I watched a few "top 5" videos, and several other Youtube videos. The racing games alone are making me drool... Jaguar certainly didn't have a Need for Speed or Road Rash!

BTW, 3DO Kid... I read a ton of your blog reviews. I must say, you're a talented dude. Your reviews are entertaining... witty, downright silly at times, and informative.

I'm finding my brother already has a lot of the "good" games, but there are a handful of titles left that he'll enjoy, either gameplay or just cuz they look good. (For one, I think I'll buy him Cyberdillo... he likes FPS a lot, and man o man, it looks like the most bizarre game ever made! I stole my tagline from it... thanks to 3DO Kid's screen capture.)

And the best thing... there are so many he doesn't have, that I'll be able to get him several titles each Christmas for years to come.

That game is honestly one of the WORST games I have EVER played--unplayable, seizure inducing, and just plain RETARDED. It's kinda like what would happen if they made a game out of 'Freddy Got Fingered.'

Gex, Samurai Shodown, Road Rash, Star Control 2, Wolfenstein 3D, Return Fire, Return Fire Maps O' Death--get those. *maybe* Need for Speed but I can tell you right now it's slow, boring, and a piece of shit by modern standards.

If you are after longbox US titles try Jake at Hailey's Used Game World - a little expensive but still has some genuine sealed games , for imports you can try Kevin & Alex over at risingstuff.com - as for evilbay from time time you'll see some of our members pitsunami and grand babare on there and Tetsuto over at HitJapan can be bargained with!
I can vouch for all these sellers and have had nothing but positive experiences dealing with them.

Last time I looked Hailey's still had some sealed Return Fire II Maps of Doom in stock - if your brother already has the original this expansion could be a good one to get - htf but reasonably priced!

I disagree - this is a SIM - the scenery moves accordingly and realistically - not like the pieces of modern shit we are exposed to these days. I still find NFS the most challenging , playable , and enjoyable racing game EVER! It was comments about it's lack of the sensation of speed that caused this franchise to immediately implode and force on us the unrealistic drivel that followed in its name - there is a reason why THIS version was used to motivate current staff to change the way NFS was made and gave us finally its spiritual successor - shift!

Oh my god!!! I've watched a couple of videos, and Cyberdillo has got to be the weirdest game ever made! It's like an acid trip while on 'shrooms. I've gotta see if I can find an interview with the creators. (Wait... is the "Making of Cyberdillo" actually on the disk? If that is "real" then it explains a lot... drugs were clearly prevalent.)

While I'm still not ruling out buying it (it'd be another test, to see if there really is anything I can do to make my brother stop loving me) at the very least, I'm going to show him the videos. It's too bizarre not to share with people!

I traded in Lucienne's Quest, even, but that's already been sold.

Some time ago i ran across an "happy birthday 3do" cd, is this from the homebrew scene?

Encryption is essentially a sequence that identifies the disc as a 3DO disc to the machine. When a game is being developed several machines from other manufacturers (in 3DO's case Apple) are used so the games are created in "unencrypted" forms so they can be tested on multiple hardware. That is why development versions of hardware have an "encrypted/un encrypted" switch on them and are highly sought after. A standard 3DO machine cannot play an unencrypted game - so most prototype software is useless to the average owner.
The "encryption" sequence was a highly guarded secret to prevent unauthorised publishers from releasing software - unfortunately for us now - it has never had public release or is easily cracked so it has almost singlehandly killed off any homebrew scene for the console.

At least that's how I understand it - 3DO Experience , Windows Killer and Bitrate are the experts here! (not me)

I'm no expert, but it's not really encryption. It's been called that for so long that it's more of a habitual name. As I understand it, and anyone feel free to step in and correct me here, it's really a set of code that defines the disc... like a hash file, even stating how much data is on the disc. Only one person has broken it and refuses to give out any info on it. He is the one that brought us the 3DO Homebrew pack #1, Happy Birthday 3DO is a Japanese title. And so far the 3DO Zone scene has only been able to change text in games. I'm crossing my fingers for a translated Dr. Hayzer.

As far as I know there is no list for games that came in long boxes. The adult titles only came in jewel cases but other than that just ask and I'll see if I can remember having a box or not. All the titles you mentioned before did.

You did a great job on the video reviews, by the way. I laughed a lot, and I learned a thing or two. But I still apparently got the wrong idea and today I bought Zhadnost. They had it for $5 at a our local last-generation store, Game Hits. Box, manual, instructions... no extra controller, tho. I decided it's too silly not to buy.

Regarding the gay FZ-10 pictured above, was there an earlier packaged version of it in Japan as well? I'm just curious.. I know the later packing for the system in the US uses essentially the same box styling as the Japanese one, ala with a different color palette.
